What do you guys think of naming kids after characters, middle names included?

Ex. Say Mr and Mrs Johnson are having a baby boy, named Harry Potter Johnson (but obviously something less mainstream), or if they're having a girl, Rory Gilmore Johnson.

Because I've recently begin to obsess over the Kill Bill movies, and I think it would be really nice if I were to have a kid named Beatrix Kiddo DiCaprio (because, you know, me and Leonardo are meant to be). Anyway, what do you guys think of it?

Tacky, cute, or meh?

PS- The character, Beatrix Kiddo is strong and isn't wimpy and delicate, so I figure it could have positive associations. And in twenty years or so, kids her age (and people my age) won't immediately think 'AHA!' if it were Harry Potter or something.

Maybe if it were a book or movie that has been extremely influential. . .over the long-term.

What if the child grows up, sees the film, and hates it? I think the name sounds nice, but it would be dragging too much with it.

I think it is horribly lame

I think it's tacky and pretty immature. First name is one thing. Beatrix is an okay name by itself. But to name a kid after a character you may not care about in ten years and the child may never care about is pretty short-sighted.

Also, I really hope Mr. and Mrs. Johnson don't name their kid Harry. That's just mean.

I really don't like it when people name their kids after tv/movie/literary characters. It's just weird to me, especially if you give the poor kid that character's entire name. Beatrix itself would be ok, although it still makes me scream "fangirl!" on the inside, but Beatrix Kiddo is really bad. =/

I think using a first name after a character is cool, especially if it's not something terribly obvious like Anakin. I don't like using the character's last name as a middle, though.

Its not mainstream enough to be tacky. I'm a Kill Bill fan, it's been a while, but I don't even remember the name and I doubt everyone and their brother will, either.

LOL, Kiddo as a middle name is awesome. I think as a first name it would be even better.

and while beatrix is a very strong character, she's also very vengeful, which isnt exactly a good thing.

I've been thinking about using the combo David Addison Lastname for a son, but I really like Addison for a girl, but it has become way too popular for me. I like David but it's not one I adore like some others. If you don't know where David Addison comes from, he's played by Bruce Willis in the show Moonlighting. It was an 80's comedy show.

I would never use a full characters name for a child but I dont think its horrible or anything. It seems I am the only one who doesn't think its totally weird though so idk..

I have never seen Kill Bill, but to me that name just seems highly weird. Beatrix would be fine, but I don't like Kiddo. And Dicaprio? Who is the father of this fangirl baby? Is a girl baby named after his object of lust?

I'm not a big fan of pop culture names... not usually a great idea imo.

Well... I was named after a character.

My first name is Talia, after a batman comic book character in the 70's.

And I've always been told "how cool!" when I explain where my name came from (not a traditional name, let alone for a strawberry blonde pale girl)

But I didnt get the "whole" name, that would have been a bit much.

No. No, no, no, no, no. I think that's one of the stupidest, most immature things to name your child for.

Since others have repeatedly shouted down the concept, I don't probably need to add my voice to the chorus.

I do think that Beatrix on its own would be a fine and subtle homage to the movie/character. But Kiddo (a casual, slangy way of saying "little kid")? That doesn't seem name-worthy at all. Imagine being a serious professor, scientist, politician, executive - or, worse, a young woman who hasn't yet proven herself, and is desperately trying to earn others' respect - and having to admit that your name means little kid. Serious cringe time.

I like the idea if they aren't bad names. I think it makes the name/naming special.

There are several character names I would consider because of their associations with films or books. Rose, Pauline, Juliet (even though those last two are real people as well)...

Harry Potter is a little funny to me, but I would love a name like that personally. It's dated, but it's unique-ish. Rory Gilmore too. I think it's cute. I haven't read the other comments, but I may be in the minority here.

Kiddo is a little silly to me, but overall, I think it's cute/nice. (Oh, sorry, Leo is mine. ;-p)

SO SO SO tacky.

I think it implies that the parents have an unhealthy and totally creepy and juvenile obsession with whatever actor/character/etc the child is named after. I find it to be very self-indulgent.

Hmm.

I LOVE the idea of naming after favorite characters/actors and whatnot...in fact, that's often what I do, or would do. Sometimes I turn out to love a name I never really considered before because of my obsession with someone/something.

I've been obsessed, for instance, with Kill Bill ever since I first saw it. ;) Beatrix was never a favorite of mine til I really started hearing it and saying it, and discovered that I LOVE it. The character is such a positive association for me. I think Beatrix Kiddo is a wonderful name and wouldn't mind having it myself. However...I wouldn't use the character's last name as a child's middle name. I mean, Kiddo is her surname...it just doesn't make a good middle name imo. To honor the character with using Beatrix is great, but I'm not sure about "Kiddo DiCaprio." Kiddo could be a nickname..

I don't mind the idea of naming kids after characters because that's where I usually get my ideas for names. That's why I've liked Vicky for such a long time, from A Ring of Endless Light and the other books within that series. I don't believe they ever gave her middle name though, so it still gives enough options.

I can see your point; if left to my own naming devises I would name my sons Lennon and August (as in John & Strindberg*) [They'd both have very classic middle names, in case they decide to rebel and be 'normal', lol]. The names have a lot of significance to me, so hopefully they will appreciate that. Otherwise well bestowing any name is a leap of faith and expression of ourselves, so in the grand scheme of things it's not too terrible.

Ultimatly it depends on the name itself. Whether it would date, if the reference is passing fad. I mean plenty of kids have been named Jack since Titanic came out, possibly inspired by the character but who knows. Where as something like Anakin (with it's blatant reference, generally negative connotations, and just being unusual) seems pretty 'fangirly'.

I can appreciate Beatrix, because that's a solid likeable name in it's own right, but don't like Kiddo because it's a common nickname. Using the combo together seems way too much.
