Named after a character
Jan. 10th, 2007 04:03 pmWhat do you guys think of naming kids after characters, middle names included?
Ex. Say Mr and Mrs Johnson are having a baby boy, named Harry Potter Johnson (but obviously something less mainstream), or if they're having a girl, Rory Gilmore Johnson.
Because I've recently begin to obsess over the Kill Bill movies, and I think it would be really nice if I were to have a kid named Beatrix Kiddo DiCaprio (because, you know, me and Leonardo are meant to be). Anyway, what do you guys think of it?
Tacky, cute, or meh?
PS- The character, Beatrix Kiddo is strong and isn't wimpy and delicate, so I figure it could have positive associations. And in twenty years or so, kids her age (and people my age) won't immediately think 'AHA!' if it were Harry Potter or something.

Date: 2007-01-10 11:34 pm (UTC)LOL, Kiddo as a middle name is awesome. I think as a first name it would be even better.

Date: 2007-01-11 12:19 am (UTC)I think Kiddo is too unusual to be a middle name.
Like, West. That ALWAYS has to be a middle name, ahah.
Yeah, it's isn't like Hermione Granger or anything, and they DO only say her name like, twice in the entire movie.

Date: 2007-01-11 12:45 am (UTC)I see it as cute, depending on who the character is.
However, I don't think Oliver Hoover Johnson would ever work. :]

Date: 2007-01-11 02:06 am (UTC)My first name is Talia, after a batman comic book character in the 70's.
And I've always been told "how cool!" when I explain where my name came from (not a traditional name, let alone for a strawberry blonde pale girl)
But I didnt get the "whole" name, that would have been a bit much.

It's still a guilty pleasure, though. :)

What's the name that you've got?

Date: 2007-01-11 04:54 am (UTC)I do think that Beatrix on its own would be a fine and subtle homage to the movie/character. But Kiddo (a casual, slangy way of saying "little kid")? That doesn't seem name-worthy at all. Imagine being a serious professor, scientist, politician, executive - or, worse, a young woman who hasn't yet proven herself, and is desperately trying to earn others' respect - and having to admit that your name means little kid. Serious cringe time.

Date: 2007-01-11 12:31 pm (UTC)I was just entertaining the idea of possible first name, middle names combinations. I doubt I'll actually settle on a name at my age.

Date: 2007-01-11 05:41 am (UTC)There are several character names I would consider because of their associations with films or books. Rose, Pauline, Juliet (even though those last two are real people as well)...
Harry Potter is a little funny to me, but I would love a name like that personally. It's dated, but it's unique-ish. Rory Gilmore too. I think it's cute. I haven't read the other comments, but I may be in the minority here.
Kiddo is a little silly to me, but overall, I think it's cute/nice. (Oh, sorry, Leo is mine. ;-p)

Date: 2007-01-11 12:32 pm (UTC)But yeah, I agree with you, as long as the association is positive, the name is nice, and it doesn't sound totally ridiculous (which mine probably does) then go for it, right?
And noope, he's mine. :]

Date: 2007-01-11 04:14 pm (UTC)I think it implies that the parents have an unhealthy and totally creepy and juvenile obsession with whatever actor/character/etc the child is named after. I find it to be very self-indulgent.

Date: 2007-01-11 09:30 pm (UTC)Hmm.
Date: 2007-01-11 04:38 pm (UTC)I've been obsessed, for instance, with Kill Bill ever since I first saw it. ;) Beatrix was never a favorite of mine til I really started hearing it and saying it, and discovered that I LOVE it. The character is such a positive association for me. I think Beatrix Kiddo is a wonderful name and wouldn't mind having it myself. However...I wouldn't use the character's last name as a child's middle name. I mean, Kiddo is her surname...it just doesn't make a good middle name imo. To honor the character with using Beatrix is great, but I'm not sure about "Kiddo DiCaprio." Kiddo could be a nickname..
Re: Hmm.
Date: 2007-01-11 09:31 pm (UTC)That's right.
Kiddo could be a nickname, and still be associated with the character, because she isn't an entirely bad one at all.
Thanks. :)

Date: 2007-01-14 05:17 pm (UTC)Ultimatly it depends on the name itself. Whether it would date, if the reference is passing fad. I mean plenty of kids have been named Jack since Titanic came out, possibly inspired by the character but who knows. Where as something like Anakin (with it's blatant reference, generally negative connotations, and just being unusual) seems pretty 'fangirly'.
I can appreciate Beatrix, because that's a solid likeable name in it's own right, but don't like Kiddo because it's a common nickname. Using the combo together seems way too much.

Date: 2007-01-14 06:38 pm (UTC)For some reason, it's one of my favourites that I've ever gotten. I appreciate it; thanks.
I think it is a little much, but if I used the nickname 'Kiddo' it probably wouldn't be.
Anakin? I feel bad for any boy/girl with that unfortunate name.
