Matt Lauer and his wife had a baby boy this morning. They named him Thijs, which is apparently a common Dutch name (Lauer's wife is Dutch) pronounced "Tice".

Personally, I don't like it. But, then, I'm not Dutch. I like the names of their other two children, Jack and Romy, though.

I like how it looks, not sure about the sound. Interested to see what our Dutch members think of this?

How interesting.

I once took a Dutch language class for fun (I was going to travel to Holland but than didn't end up going.) Anyway I learned two things in that class that stuck with me. One is how to say "The cow is in the garden." (Of all the random things to remember. How helpful... lol) And the other is that when a word has a 'ij' together, think of it as being a y. And it does kind of look like that, if the bottom of the i curled towards the j. That helped me when I was trying to pronounce words and would be confused by wanting to give them a J sound. So here I'd think of this name as being spelled Thys instead. I guess the 'th' would still confuse me here... I always struggle with names that have a silent 'th' like Thalia and Mathilda. But anyway...

I had no idea his wife was Dutch. Cool. And congrats to them.

the "th" is pronounced like a normal T.
I dont know why the H is in the name because you dont pronounce it. However, the normal version of Thijs is with the h.
I've seen some boys names Tijs (which is more logical) but its not the normal way of writing this name

Right, that's what I was saying. It's the same as the names Thalia and Mathilda which are pronounced the same as Talia and Matilda.

It drives me nuts when the H spellings are used because every American instinct in me wants to make a "thhhh" sound.

Nice name. But no one will ever know how to pronounce it.

I love the sound of it, but the spelling is terrible, even if it is traditional Dutch. Only because the poor kid will CONSTANTLY be having to tell people how to pronounce it in school when teachers read the roll and freeze up at the sight of it. LoL I've had to do this all my life with my last name, and I just know that LOOK when they get to my name. Sucks even worse if it's your first name!

The spelling is fine, as it's authentic Dutch. But I cannot bring myself to like the sound of it AT ALL. :-P
