Edwardian names: Alliteration and Assonance

Hey back again, sorry but I saw this and wanted to post it for you all.

Nameberry.com has an article about Edwardian names and alliteration. And the fondness people in this period had for giving these striking alliterative/assonant names.

Here are the names they listed:

Arabella Adela
Aurelia Amelia
Ava Ada
Bella Isabella
Cordelia Cecilia
Edith Elsie Lydia Lavinia
Eleanor Ella
Eva Evelyn
Iris Idalia Ilene
Iris Nerissa

Iva Eva

Johanna Joan Sophia Maria

Lucy Lucilla

Pearly Persis

Penelope Polymnia

Primrose Primula

Ophelia Adelia

Rosalind Rosella

Austin Augustus

Donald Ronald

Edward Edwin

Frank Francis

Herbert Gilbert

Jasper Jospah

Joseph Josiah

Leopold Leo

Percy Percival

Sidney Leslie Lawrence

Theodore Ivore

Valentine Vincent Victor

If you were to give your kid an alliterative/assonant name what would it be? Do you know anyone who has a purposeful or not purposeful name like these?

I think it is cute but I think it can be done more subtly.

I do love a lot of the names individually, but most of the combos are pretty bad.

Mixing up some of the ones here to make them less rhyme-y, just for fun:
Ada Amelia
Amelia Adela
Lucy Lavinia
Evelyn Eleanor
Penelope Primrose

Aurelia Amelia? My great-great aunt was Aurelia Amalia, from Poland (1901). I never considered it was a trendy thing. It certainly makes the two names easier to remember when they fit together so neatly.

Some of those are overkill, the ones with the same name shortened (Percy Percival, Leopold Leo), or *gag* Donald Ronald. The more subtle, like Iris Nerissa, Penelope Polymnia, Valentine Vincent Victor, I like better.

Like [livejournal.com profile] rosabelle, I'd go with more alliterative and less rhyming name combinations:

Nicholas Nathaniel
Evelyn Elizabeth
Amelia Anne
David Daniel
Finn Francis
Catherine Claire
Rachel Rhianna
Michaela Marie
Elijah Evan
Stephanie Sarah

I don't know anyone who has a first + middle alliterative or rhyming name, but I've known a few people with alliterative first + last names---that combo seems to work better (just ask Ryan Reynolds, January Jones, or Chris Carpenter).

Actually I would just prefer Scarlet Sabine. It's sounds like a name from a fiction novel ;)

I work at a charity and we got a donation the other day from a Peter Peters. I thought that was kind of amusing. It's also amusing/cute when people with similar names get married (e.g., Lois & Lewis, Christopher & Christine, Alexandra & Alexander, etc.)

I've got aunts and uncles who are Mark and Mary, and Pat and Patty

I always thought Isabelle Elizabeth was fun since the names are almost each other backwards. I wouldn't use the name, I just think it is kind of fun.

Bella Isabella takes quite some ignorance to achieve...

I'm Janelle Marie Noƫlle. I like that my parents added "Marie" -- it gives the name a nice rhyme and flow whilst still breaking up the -elle names. :)

I like alliteration but the sing-songy feel of the names is a bit much like Ophelia Adelia, or too similar in general Iva Eva.

Cecily Clara

I don't think I would use alliterative/assonant first and middle names. I know an Elizabeth Elise, and I've always found her name odd.
