What do you think of Malcolm?
Nickname would be Mal.

i agree with [profile] in_the_starlite. the prefix mal means bad in english too. malnutrition, malfunction, malpractice, malformation, etc. it has a definite negativity.

Malcolm's pretty good, but I'm not liking Mal either.

And I immediately thought of that show "Malcolm in the Middle". I've never seen it, so I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing or irrelevant lol.

I personally like Malachi better, and you could still use Mal if you wanted.

Also, Mal is a common nickname for Mallory and seems feminine in that regard.

I love the name Malcolm, but I'm not too keen on Mal. NMS.

It's a good name. I'd like it as soon as I had some reason to say it without "... in the Middle" following it.

I don't like Mal which means bad, not just in spanish but as a root word found in many english terms. Think of things like MALignant, MALformed, MALadjusted, disMAL, grand MAL seizures... It's just an extremely negative sound to me.

Also, I suspect I made your icon. (Don't worry, I don't care about credit or anything when it's just a cropped image from Getty.) It's just funny to see it. Made it the same set as this one.

I like Malcolm, I'm not a big fan of Mal, but I dont hate it either. It does have a negative sound to me as well, but yeah if I knew someone named Mal I would probably get over it.

I like Malcolm alot but not Mal at all.
If you need a nick name I suppose you could use Colm.

Colm does not sound like 'cum' it sounds like the word Coal with an M at the end.
Like the actors
Colm Meany and Colm Fiore.

Even when you say the name Malcolm it doesn't sound like "Mal-come"

You know, I actually kind of like it. I normally wouldn't, I don't think, but I do like it the more I look at it. I don't like the way it LOOKS, but I like the way it sounds. "Mal" I don't like, though, because it means "bad" in Spanish (or something along those lines--I don't really quite remember. I was never good at Spanish.)

Captain Tightpants!

I love it, actually. And Mal means bad, so what? Mallory means "sadness". Mary means "bitter". Who cares.

My immediate reaction! I love my Captain.

Also, I completely agree. Mal might mean bad, but Malcolm doesn't and that's the actual name... plus, as you said, so many common names have "bad" or unpleasant meanings and people rarely know about them nor do they care.

Malcolm doesn't really need a nickname.

Malcolm is okay but I don't like Mal as a nn b/c I think of it as a nn for the female name Mallory and it's hard for me to associate it with anything else.
