I love it, actually. And Mal means bad, so what? Mallory means "sadness". Mary means "bitter". Who cares.

My immediate reaction! I love my Captain.

Also, I completely agree. Mal might mean bad, but Malcolm doesn't and that's the actual name... plus, as you said, so many common names have "bad" or unpleasant meanings and people rarely know about them nor do they care.

Exactly! So many common names mean horrible things and no one even knows it. Mal (mal, not mahl) is a cute nickname I think.
