In your opinion, is "Bear" a suitable nickname for a boy with the name Theodore?
(The thought process being Theodore -> Teddy -> Teddy Bear -> Bear)

I think Bear is an appropriate nickname for anyone.

Haha this.

Michelle Duggar calls Josie "Kitten" because she was so tiny that her cries sounded like meows. Nicknames... can really come from anywhere.

I think anyone can use Bear, but I just always think of a gay bear.

That's kinda my husband's position on nicknames. He believes that nicknames are given to you by your friends and short names come from your actual name. For instance some of his friends are Leta (Sarah), PC (Chris), and Sven (Dave). His nickname is the "ie" sound added on to his last name.

So agreed. You can have nicknames that have nothing to do with your actually name, and a lot of people do. (I know I have several!)

I guess...but, really then I could rationalize calling anyone "Bear"

I guess so.
My mother calls me Monkey, which really has nothing to do with anything (I don't even really like monkeys!).

To me, nicknames tend to be separated into two categories: 1) those derived from the full name and can probably be used anywhere (I call my little brother Lu) and 2) those that are more...pet name/endearment (my nephew is either Monkey or Darling); generally no one outside of family/close friends is going to use it.

Bear, I think, straddles the two. To me, it's quite masculine sounding, and not silly/fluffy, so he could even use it with people outside of his family.

Blah. Did that make any sense at all, lol?

Not as a legitimate nickname that will carry him through life and jobs. It's a childish nickname, which really means that it would work on anybody, but not in public or professional settings.

I've got a distant relative who's husband is Edward, but who always goes by Bear. In fact I didn't even know that wasn't his real name until a few days ago. Same logic. It fits him really well.

sure why not? my FIL's name is Theodore. He gets Ted and Theo. His youngest daughter is Teddi. She gets Theo as a nickname, too.

My goddaughters name is Holly, and I started off calling her Holla, then Holly-Loo (short for hallelujah). Now she goes by LuLu. She's only 2 1/2, so the nickname is adorable on her.
My siblings and I, growing up, were Goopie (Tamara), Giggy (Thomas), Bumma (John), and Googalina (myself). My dad just started calling us these names and they stuck.
My friends call me Jake sometimes, but that's because Jac- is the first syllable of my last name.
