In your opinion, is "Bear" a suitable nickname for a boy with the name Theodore? 
(The thought process being Theodore -> Teddy -> Teddy Bear -> Bear)

even better question: why must nick names come from the name its self???

That's kinda my husband's position on nicknames. He believes that nicknames are given to you by your friends and short names come from your actual name. For instance some of his friends are Leta (Sarah), PC (Chris), and Sven (Dave). His nickname is the "ie" sound added on to his last name.

So agreed. You can have nicknames that have nothing to do with your actually name, and a lot of people do. (I know I have several!)
