hi i'm new. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and we've finialized the name choice. For a boy it's Leonard James after his father and my grandfather and Christopher Kaden. For a girl it's Jadie Grace and Cayleigh Christabella. What do you guys think?

Like Christopher and Grace, not so keen on the others. Jadie sounds too nicknamey and I can't picture it on a grown woman. I like Jada better. Cayleigh combines a few of my least favorite naming trends into one, so needless to say, I don't like it.

Not crazy about Leonard, because the only one I know is Leanard Skinnard (ew) but it's a good combo and it's nice to name babies after family members.

I like Jadie Grace, although it's not really my style.

Cayleigh Christabella is too tryndee for my tastes. I like Cayley and I love Crista though.

Good luck with trying!

We have really differnet tastes, but I do love "James" as a middle name.
I'd rather "Jade" than "Jadie"
And a less trendee spelling of "Cayleigh"

I once knew a "Kaley", spelled like Keilih. When I first saw the name, I couldn't figure out how to say it.

I like them all minus christabella.

Do you REALLY want to know what people think?

From: [identity profile] ewaeva.livejournal.com
OK. You DID ask.

Kaden: Every other boy under the age of 4 seems to be named something that rhymes with Aiden. This will scream "2006 baby." I'm glad it's only a middle name. Christopher should stand out from the 7 Aidens, Jaydens and Cadens in his class.

Jadie: Jade or Jada would be nice, but Jadie sounds like a nickname, as onedayinjuly said. I think it's a little flaky. If it were me, I'd rather have a stronger, more elegant name. She won't be a little girl forever.

Cayleigh: I am very tired of all the Kayla/Kaylee/Cayley/Kaeghleigh names, in all their permutations. Also, I think that the "y", the "-ay" sound, and the "eigh" ending also makes it very much a "2006 baby!!" name.

Christabella sounds like what I would have named my Barbie when I was 5. Too frilly and sparkly and over the top. What about Christine, or Anabella?

Leonard, James, Christopher and Grace are wonderful.

Not just 2006

The AY sound has been trendy longer than that. About 8-10 years ago I went through all of the names on the Oregon births list (I think the list was from 1996; definitely before 2000 at any rate) and listed all of the "newfangled" names that featured that particular sound. (Specifically I counted two syllable names that were stressed on the first syllable.) Given that this was several computers ago, I have neither the numbers nor the names, but the list was jaw-droppingly long and contained some real doozies.

So I wouldn't say that the AY sound marks a baby as being born in 2006 specifically, but it does seem like a recent and surprisingly long-lasting fad.

i like the boy's names, but Cayleigh Cristabella is really floofy and...well, it sounds prissy to me, not to mention it combines a lot of popular names (which if you are okay with the popularity, fine). Kaylie is popular, changing a lee sound to leigh is popular. and adding bella/belle is very popular too.

Jadie Grace is ok, but if you're trying to go for not super popular names, Grace is really up there, and Jade is rising quickly.

I think Christabella might be better if it were Christabel instead. The extra syllable throws it off. I'm with the others on the anti-leigh/aden names. Just too trendy for me. I like both the boy names but the mn for Christopher could be improved upon.

I think Christabel is lovely. It's feminine without being all "look at me! i'm so purdy in my pink ruffled dress and -ella tacked onto the end of my name!"

I hope that the feedback here doesn't turn you off from this community. really, it's mostly ok. :) that said here are my feelings:

while I don't care for Leonard myself, it is nice to honor his father & gfather & sounds good with James.

I do think Kaden is trendy, but I kind of like it in spite of that & it sounds ok with Christopher.

Jadie sounds like... I don't know. like someone with a cold saying "Janie". it sounds too nicknamey.

Grace is ok.

Cayleigh (and all the variations...) are overused but it's an ok name to me.

Christabella is just too much.

:/ hope that didn't come off sounding mean.

Did you want to hear which of the two name combos we prefer, and why?

I really don't like any of them.

Leonard James - I don't care for Leonard at all. I think James Leonard would be better. Although, Leo would be a cute nn for Leonard.
Christopher Kaden - I don't like the double K sound and Kaden is a madeup krappy name. At least you stuck it in the middle, though. Still, Christopher would sound a lot better with a different middle name. maybe Christopher Aidan if you like the -den sound.

Jadie Grace - what the heck is Jadie? Sounds very little girlish, I can't see it aging well or standing on it's own. Can you really picture a 40 year old professional woman named Jadie? And Grace is such a typical filler mn, unless it has personal meaning to you, I'd considering something else.

Cayleigh Christabella - oh wow. First of all, Cayleigh is a gross tryndee misspelling. If you must use the name, what is wrong with Kayley? I believe that'd be the most common spelling, even though I hate that too. Regardless, the name is tryndee junk that will be EXTREMELY dated. In 20 years, when someone hears the name Cayleigh, they will think early millennium baby. Christabella is WAY too much. Christabel is prettier, I think. I also think it would make a MUCH better first name than Cayleigh.

Your male names

Hi Melissa

Thank you for your clarification - that helps a lot!

This may get a bit long, so I am breaking it up into two posts. This one will be about your male names.

As far as trashcan stuffing is concerned, the name that would concern me a little is Leonard. The stumbling block for me is the 'nard part, which, at least in my accent, is pronounced just like "nerd". That might just be too tempting for potential bullies. Do you like Leo on its own? I might just go for that directly - it would still honor Leonard while sidestepping the whole "nerd" issue. (Another possibility to honor him would be to use a different name that also means lion. The only thing that jumps out at me at the moment is Liev, like the actor Liev Schreiber, but that is probably a little too wild for your naming style.)

James and Christopher are both classics that have been around and in use forever; I think those are both pretty safe.

What meaning do you have for Kaden? In my name book, Kaden is put together with Cade and Caden, and the meaning isn't really all that positive. It says that they come from a surname that "originated as a nickname from a vocabulary element denoting something round and lumpish." If you are looking for names with good, strong meanings, this may not be the one for you.

Your female names

I have to confess that I have a bit of a hesitation about the Jade names that most people don't seem to have. It's vocabulary-based, so not a personal association, so I'll just tell you what it is and you can decide whether it is an issue for you or not.

The vocabulary word jade refers to the stone, but there is another word jade (with a completely different word history) that is used to refer to a broken-down horse or a strumpet. Now, I can almost guarantee you that no bully will ever know this: I've never heard it used this way in modern English, only in things I've read in lit. class... but I am enough of a book geek myself that it would prevent me from feeling comfortable using it as a name. (But I was also criticized for feeling uncomfortable using "Randy" as a name because of the British slang meaning (back before it was widely known in American slang), so take my opinion with a grain of salt, please!)

With Christopher and Christabella both on your name list, I gather that your faith is important to you. So with that in mind, Grace wouldn't be a filler middle name, but would have real meaning for you. I like that.

Sorry, I have to run - let me finish up the other two later on, okay? I hope this has helped you so far!

i love leonard james. and i love leo as a nickname... christopher has never been my cup of tea, and kaden is too trendy for me. jadie is too cutesy and grace is nice... cayleigh christabella... too long and too many similar sounds and vowels.

everyone is saying Jadie is too cutsey, but I really like it. I hear it as a spelled-out version of J.D. instead of Jade with an ie on the end. If my daughter's nickname wasn't already Jade, I'd consider Jadie as a middle name for another kid.

I like them all.
Christopher Kaden is my favorite for the boy names and Jadie Grace is my favorite for the girl names.
Leonard James sounds like a king name. Strong, powerful.
Christopher Kaden has a common classic name-Christopher- with a name that sets it aside from being boring- Kaden. I like it.
Jadie Grace is just adorable.
Cayleigh Christabella is cute. I don't think Christabella is too much for a middle name.. but I do like the idea of Christabel/l better. :)

How come the boys get such lovely names and the girls get crappeigh, made-up babble?

I rename the girls Jillian and Catriona. I'm sorry, but your daughter is not going to be 3 forever, and the thought of a 47 year old woman named Cayleigh makes me both laugh and cry at the same time. Also, the spelling is awful. It looks ignorant and trashy.

Leonard James - I love James but I hate Leonard
Christopher Kaden - I love it, except I like to spell Kaden with a 'C' instead of 'K'

Jadie Grace - I love Grace, but why Jadie instead of Jade?
Cayleigh Christabella - No offence, but I absolutly hate that

From: [identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com
leonard james- i dont like leonard, but i can appreciate the meaning behind it. have you considered james leonard?

christopher kaden- you cant go wrong with christopher. kaden is wrong in so many ways. unnecessary k, made up name, another -aden offender, etc etc.

jadie grace- grace is gorgeous, of course. im not following jadie. have you considered jade? janie? josie?

cayleigh christabella- i dont like the name cayleigh to begin with, its too little girly, remember that youre not just naming a baby, youre naming an adult too. so, i dont like the sound of the name and your creative spelling (and unnecessary use of the letter y) does nothing to help the cause. i am not wild about christabella, but it makes for a really nice middle name.
