[identity profile] breazeale1331.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
hi i'm new. My husband and I are trying to have a baby and we've finialized the name choice. For a boy it's Leonard James after his father and my grandfather and Christopher Kaden. For a girl it's Jadie Grace and Cayleigh Christabella. What do you guys think?

Like Christopher and Grace, not so keen on the others. Jadie sounds too nicknamey and I can't picture it on a grown woman. I like Jada better. Cayleigh combines a few of my least favorite naming trends into one, so needless to say, I don't like it.

Not crazy about Leonard, because the only one I know is Leanard Skinnard (ew) but it's a good combo and it's nice to name babies after family members.

I like Jadie Grace, although it's not really my style.

Cayleigh Christabella is too tryndee for my tastes. I like Cayley and I love Crista though.

Good luck with trying!

I think Gracie Jade sounds better. I like Christopher Kayden.

We have really differnet tastes, but I do love "James" as a middle name.
I'd rather "Jade" than "Jadie"
And a less trendee spelling of "Cayleigh"

I like the girls' choices, and I like Christopher Kaden.

I like them all minus christabella.

Do you REALLY want to know what people think?

OK. You DID ask.

Kaden: Every other boy under the age of 4 seems to be named something that rhymes with Aiden. This will scream "2006 baby." I'm glad it's only a middle name. Christopher should stand out from the 7 Aidens, Jaydens and Cadens in his class.

Jadie: Jade or Jada would be nice, but Jadie sounds like a nickname, as onedayinjuly said. I think it's a little flaky. If it were me, I'd rather have a stronger, more elegant name. She won't be a little girl forever.

Cayleigh: I am very tired of all the Kayla/Kaylee/Cayley/Kaeghleigh names, in all their permutations. Also, I think that the "y", the "-ay" sound, and the "eigh" ending also makes it very much a "2006 baby!!" name.

Christabella sounds like what I would have named my Barbie when I was 5. Too frilly and sparkly and over the top. What about Christine, or Anabella?

Leonard, James, Christopher and Grace are wonderful.

I think they are all nice, except I am not a big fan of christabella.

i like the boy's names, but Cayleigh Cristabella is really floofy and...well, it sounds prissy to me, not to mention it combines a lot of popular names (which if you are okay with the popularity, fine). Kaylie is popular, changing a lee sound to leigh is popular. and adding bella/belle is very popular too.

Jadie Grace is ok, but if you're trying to go for not super popular names, Grace is really up there, and Jade is rising quickly.

Not just 2006

The AY sound has been trendy longer than that. About 8-10 years ago I went through all of the names on the Oregon births list (I think the list was from 1996; definitely before 2000 at any rate) and listed all of the "newfangled" names that featured that particular sound. (Specifically I counted two syllable names that were stressed on the first syllable.) Given that this was several computers ago, I have neither the numbers nor the names, but the list was jaw-droppingly long and contained some real doozies.

So I wouldn't say that the AY sound marks a baby as being born in 2006 specifically, but it does seem like a recent and surprisingly long-lasting fad.

I think Christabella might be better if it were Christabel instead. The extra syllable throws it off. I'm with the others on the anti-leigh/aden names. Just too trendy for me. I like both the boy names but the mn for Christopher could be improved upon.

Yes, you are right. Ok, "1996-2006 baby!!"
At least, I hope it doesn't last TOO far past 2006 ;)

To me "Cayleigh" seems to be a lovely mix of _a bunch of trends_, including the "ay", which combine to make it particularly unappealing and datable.

It came from the 80s

Kayleigh is another name that came from an 80s song. (Marillion, "Kayleigh," from 1985.)

"In 2005, it was revealed that 96% of Kayleighs living in Britain were born after 1985 and is undoubted that the Marillion song inspired this amazing rise in popularity of the name Kayleigh" -- from the Wikipedia entry for Kayleigh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kayleigh)

Doesn't it make you want to start a band to get some awesome names on people's radar? :)

I hope that the feedback here doesn't turn you off from this community. really, it's mostly ok. :) that said here are my feelings:

while I don't care for Leonard myself, it is nice to honor his father & gfather & sounds good with James.

I do think Kaden is trendy, but I kind of like it in spite of that & it sounds ok with Christopher.

Jadie sounds like... I don't know. like someone with a cold saying "Janie". it sounds too nicknamey.

Grace is ok.

Cayleigh (and all the variations...) are overused but it's an ok name to me.

Christabella is just too much.

:/ hope that didn't come off sounding mean.

Melissa, can you tell us what you need from us, so we can be constructive and help out instead of making you feel bad?

Did you want to hear which of the two name combos we prefer, and why?

I think Christopher James has a really stong sound too it. It sounds very solid and masculine!

I really don't like any of them.

Leonard James - I don't care for Leonard at all. I think James Leonard would be better. Although, Leo would be a cute nn for Leonard.
Christopher Kaden - I don't like the double K sound and Kaden is a madeup krappy name. At least you stuck it in the middle, though. Still, Christopher would sound a lot better with a different middle name. maybe Christopher Aidan if you like the -den sound.

Jadie Grace - what the heck is Jadie? Sounds very little girlish, I can't see it aging well or standing on it's own. Can you really picture a 40 year old professional woman named Jadie? And Grace is such a typical filler mn, unless it has personal meaning to you, I'd considering something else.

Cayleigh Christabella - oh wow. First of all, Cayleigh is a gross tryndee misspelling. If you must use the name, what is wrong with Kayley? I believe that'd be the most common spelling, even though I hate that too. Regardless, the name is tryndee junk that will be EXTREMELY dated. In 20 years, when someone hears the name Cayleigh, they will think early millennium baby. Christabella is WAY too much. Christabel is prettier, I think. I also think it would make a MUCH better first name than Cayleigh.
