My husband and I had a lot of trouble naming our daughter, because we played word association with a lot of names. He'd say "Lydia" and I said, "eyelids!" My friend said, "Nyla." DH said, "Nylon string!"

What are some of your word associations that go with names? Especially the bad/funny ones that would be such an overpowering association that it would prevent you from naming a kid that.

i think the spelling of olivia is awful and always makes me think of an olive, which i think tastes disgusting. same thing goes for the name oliver.

olivia makes me think of liver, I guess because of the "liv" in the middle. I like olives though and olive leaves somehow symbolise peace.. but if you hate them then that makes sense ;) i don't like oliver either

I completely agree. That's possibly the one thing that could keep me from using Olivia.

Shad - shat
Ophelia - I feel ya
Virginia - virgin
Calliope - canteloupe

And actually, my son's name kind of falls on this list.. Sawyer. My husband pointed out that the way we pronounce it sounds like "saw yer," as in, "HAHA, I saw yer underwear!" We didn't realize this until after we named him though, lol. Luckily, most people pronounce it Soy-er and wouldn't think of that. Our pronunciation is a southern thing I guess.

Haha I never even realized that about Sawyer. We've kind of joked around about Owen's name too.. 'you'll be 'owen' me some money' ;P

I totally see it as saw-yer but always pronounce it correctly, lol.

Anyone I've ever known with the name has always pronounced it Saw-yer.. so that's correct to me. ;)

Although when people ask his name, I just give in and say soy-er, because otherwise they're going "Huh? Sawyuh?"

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. I see it as saw-yer and pronounce it soy-er. lol

Heh, I think the majority of people do. Even my mom says Soy-er. My husband and I are the only ones that say Saw-yer.

Oh, hey! Here's a video in which you can hear my husband and I saying his name. Ignore us acting all mushy, it was the first time he had walked, hehe.

Awww, so cute.

Okay, the name didnt sound as 'bad' in real life as it did in my head. I like the pronunciation! :)

Haha. I definately say it Saw-yer. That's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced actually. I think maybe it is a southern thing. :(

This is one of those things that's hard to come up with on the spot for me.

My #1 name, Margaret, makes me think of margarine.

From: [identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com
Marjorie is even more like margerine... but it's my grandmother's name so at least I think of her first, before margerine

I'm with you on the Ophelia thing. I like the name, but whenever I hear that people actually name their daughter that I want to scream at them: "Did you even READ Hamlet?!"

yeah, it honestly kills me. why not just name her "misery?" that has a nice ring.

Seriously, if people want to go for a romantic, Shakespearean name, there are plenty of strong female characters to name a girl after.

All I've got right now is:

Dane - Stain.

My SO was the one who made that association. And it killed the name for me.

Ugh. I hate the name Mira. It reminds me of how sometimes when my SO wants my attention, he says, "Mira!" ("Look" in Spanish...) And it really annoys me.

Anneliese. MY husband says it sounds like Anal-Ease.

My friend once pointed out that Willa sounds like someone is saying "Rilla" with a lisp. Amelia --> everyone who was born in the late seventies, early eighties will immediately think "Bedelia!"

Calvin = "And Hobbes?"

I love Diana, but everyone would think it was after Princess Diana. Bleccch.

I had a friend Leslie who was called Lezzie (like lesbian) for ten years during elementary and middle school. I think its a pretty name but after that...no way.

I love Virginia. I really do. But my sister told me, "Virginia Vagina Virginia Vagina!"

I can't use it now. It's tarnished.
