I love the sound of it, and I think it is slowly climbing my ranks...but are the connotations too tragic and strong? In America at least, the name is hardly ever used...the Shakespeare connection is probably too strong. But its such a lovely name!

Ditto. I like the name Judas, too, but name has too much negative baggage for me to consider using on a human being.

I put it on my list and my husband quickly vetoed it. I think it's quite pretty though, despite the connotations.

Ditto! It was on my list before we knew we were having a boy, but my hubby vetoed it because "it's depressing".

Mine said no just because of it's from Shakespeare, I don't even think the depressing connotation was his problem. I believe he vetoed Juliet for the same reason. So, Shakespeare is a no go, but Stephanie Meyer is a-ok LMAO.

I like it a lot, but I wouldn't use it since I think it's a bit too similar to my daughter's name (Amelia).

I don't immediately think of Shakespeare's Ophelia, personally.

I like it.
I'm more pleased that it's a literary reference than concerned about the specific context of that reference. I think I like Ofelia better, honestly, but not in lj's serif font.

Fonts matter, yo.

Was on my parents' name list.

It is also this laptop's name.

I'd use it in a heartbeat, without any shame.

I prefer Ophelie, and the Shakespearean connotation is exactly why.

i love the name ophelia. i probably wouldn't use it as a first name because of the shakespeare connotations though.

I want one of my daughters to be named Ophelia Marilyn. Though that might change, it's one of my favourite names ever.

Not bad. And no, connotations not strong enough. My husband won't let me use Antigone, though.

I know an Othelia and it's really grown on me (the th is hard, not like the English 'th'.. sounds like Oh-teal-ya..)

I love Ophelia, it's one of my favorite female Shakesperean names. To me the Shakespeare reference is a plus for any name, but then I was a theatre major.

Even if I had no idea who Ophelia was, I'd still think it was a seriously fugly name.

One of my friends has a daughter with the middle name Ophelia. She was playing around with the idea of using her middle name for a while, until she got a bunch of leering "Oh, I'll FEEL YA!" comments from the boys at school.

Somehow her first name didn't seem so bad after that...

I'm American and don't automatically think of Shakespeare. I love the name!
