[identity profile] losing-ophelia.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Hi,

I'm not pregnant. I'm here to rename myself.

Brief History: I was named after my mother and a dead relative on her side of the family. I've never gotten along with my mother AT ALL. We haven't spoken in years. There is no chance of reconciliation. I want to move on. My name holds me to her.

So, that being said I've found quite a few names that I like. The one that has the most resonance with me is Violet Awen. The only real glitch with this name is that my last name is Graves. I like Violet Graves, I like Violet Awen Graves. I'm concerned about the initials. Do you think it really matters? How often to people really see all three initials? Does anyone have similar initials that spell something and how does it affect you, or does it?

Thanks for any input,

Undecided.

If it matters to you, have two middle names so that your initials aren't VAG or make it Awen Violet Graves. Or just change your last name as well.

I like the rhytm of Awen Violet Graves, I'll second that suggestion!
I'm also a fan of the going-by-the-middle-name thing :)

I don't think the 3 initials is something that comes up a lot, but you should feel comfortable with what you pick, if the situation occurred.
My initials spell JAB, and it's not anything that I'm proud of. Not that it bothers me, but it could be better (and it could be worse!).

In the process of naming my future daughter, I'm paying attention to what initials would spell, for example her middle name can't being with I, because then it would spell AIL, and that would be just bad karma, so to speak.
But VAG is not something that is intrinsically bad, so I say it's all up to how YOU feel about it.

I don't think you should use the initials VAG.

I don't think anyone outside of babyname communities and elementary school kids still amused with their spelling ability ever think about what initials spell. Of course though if its uncomfy for you then you should look into alternatives. I second the first suggestions you could do what the first poster said and add an extra name or maybe switch the names around.

I changed my name too (though not legally, I/will have enough legal names already) so... yay for name switches. :)

Welcome from a fellow name-changer (who had very similar reasons). Myself, I practically went on a two-week retreat working on my name, spending my free time outside of work researching and experimenting with names, and talking with a friend who'd changed his name.

I'd be careful with the initials, myself. (My new initials are WNS--I even googled to see if it meant anything significant.)

Whatever you do, live with the name a little bit. Practise signing your new name. Try it out at a party where you don't know anybody. Soon, you'll respond as readily to the name as the one you grew up with.

Peace
Whittier

Haha. I wanted to name my baby Aubrey Samantha Sawtelle if it's a girl, but her initials would've spelled ass ;) I write my initials a thousand times a day at work so I didn't wanna take any chances. Now I'm leaning more towards Aubrey Elaine or Norah Elaine (which would give her the initials NES.. yay for old school Nintendo ha)

It really matters with what you're comfortable with.. and if you ever have to write your initials you could always just write VG :)
