[identity profile] poohbaby.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Are there any names you love but would never use because of the meanings? For example, Cameron. I love the name but it means "bent/crooked nose" so my husband says no. And how about seasonal names? What are your thoughts on these? For example, would you name a baby Autumn if she was born in Spring? My main reason for asking is because my husband and I finally agree on a middle name for baby #4, "Noel"  but it means "born on Christmas" or just "Christmas" depending on where you look, but baby is due in June. lol  I'm sure it could still work and in the end it's our decision but I think hormones have the best of me at this point, so opinions are wanted :)  Thanks!

Just as a middle name, I don't think the meaning of "Christmas" is a big deal. :)

I love Autumn, but since the baby is due in the spring, I'm iffy about using it now. I think meanings matter, to me anyway.

I know a girl named Noelle, and she was born in September. Kind of fits her too, she's tiny like an elf. :P

However, nah. Mine would have to be born in that season for the name to work for me. And I don't really look at meanings. Maybe I should..

I don't like the name, but given how trendy it is... Kennedy means "misshapen head." :-\

I don't think "Christmas" would be a big deal. My first name means "Christmas child" and I was born December 6, which is pretty close to Christmas, but I don't think it matters if the kid wasn't born around Christmas. It's a nice meaning anyway.

Kennedy doesn't really have a nice meaning to me, nor does Cameron.

No, I don't think it's a problem that Noel means 'Christmas', especially not since it'll be his middle name. I like Noel!

Meanings matter to me, too, but never to the point where I decide to not use a name because of its meaning.

I really like the name Cameron, so the meaning of it wouldn't deter me. Wesley means bland and I still like it. I guess it depends on how much I like the name.

i don't like tacky month names (november, september, ect) especially when the kid isn't even born in that month, but i don't have a problem with august being born in january or june being born in march, ect. i feel like the more common the name is, the less the meaning matters.

as for noel, i know a girl named noelle who was born in may. i like the name, i don't care what it means. i don't really associate it that much with christmas anyway because i know her, so i'm sure the same would go for your baby.

I like the sound of the name Natalie but wouldn't use it due to it's Christmas meaning (we're Noachides and therefore do not celebrate Christmas).

I'm not too bothered about seasonal names being at the 'right' time, Amira is traditionally a name for Shavout, but I wouldn't save it only for a child born in early summer/near the holiday.

Wow, Cameron was on the top of our list but not after learning the meaning lol. I like Noel; and I probably wouldn't name my Spring baby Autumn.. however, a good friend of mine has her heart set on naming her daughter Autumn Rose if she ever has children. It all depends on the person.

That being said, I think I'm gonna go look up the rest of our names and see what they mean, maybe it'll help cut it down.

I have a friend named August who was actually born in December, so I'm sure it'll be fine!

Imagine all the girls named Natalie. Do you think they're ALL born on December 25th? That'd be scary if they were!! Lol

Meanings absolutely mean something, that's why they exist, and thus they should be taken into consideration, to what extent, is up to each person. I knew Cameron meant crooked nose and so would never use it. Just like I know Calvin means bald, so I would never use it. I think it's absurd to give a child a name, more specifically a first name, that's either a month, a day, or a season, that the child wasn't born in/on. For instance, Nicole Kidman named her Monday born daughter Sundae Rose, and even though Sundae ala the desert, is not the same as the day Sunday, they sound the same, so when I hear a child with that name, I assume it means the child was born on that day. The middle name only helps solidify it because she may as well have named her daughter "Sunday ROAST. As not just in my family but many families, it's like a tradition to have a big Sunday roast family dinner.
I think giving a child a name of a day, month, or season they weren't born in/on, is as bad as parents who give masculine names to girls, and vice versa, because they clearly wanted something they didn't get, and it's like some way of trying to satisfy. I hate it! Michael, Charles, etc, is not cute on a girl, it's stupid!

She named her Sunday as a tribute to someone.

Well, I stand corrected, but I still don't like it for the same reasons. Plus, the woman she named her after, went by the name Sunday Reed, but she was actually born Lelda Sunday Baillieu, so Sunday wasn't even her first name. If they wanted to name her after this Sunday woman, they could have used it for a middle name in my opinion. I just think it seems off for a person to have a name that doesn't fit.

I agree that masculine names on girls just doesn't work... but I don't think in every case people who name their daughter Summer when she's born in autumn are naming them that because they wish their daughter was born in summer.

A lot of people like names just for how they look and sound, and most of the people I come across don't know the meanings of many names anyway.

I agree with you and I like alot of names too just for the look and sound, but I guess the meanings of names hold more significance for me, and so I prefer to know what the meaning is before deciding if I want it on a name list, and if I don't like the meaning, no matter how nice I think the name is, I just can't see the sense in using it anyway. After-all, it's not the parent choosing the name who has to live with the name, it's their child.

My friend Autumn was born in the spring. I don't think there's anything wrong with it....

Meanings are an extra bonus as far as I'm concerned, second to how they sound. I'd be kind of iffy about using a name with a realllly bad meaning (like, I dunno, "murderer" or something), or one that just fills me with distaste.

Noel is pretty. If people ask, your baby was like an early Christmas present. ;) Out-of-season seasonal names don't bother me.

I personally don't care about name meanings at all. I choose the name for how it looks and sounds. :)

I don't think there is anything wrong with naming a baby born in spring Noel. Or a baby born in the spring named Autumn, either.

Name meanings don't mean much to me. If the name means something nice that's a bonus. But I love the name Cameron, and its my husband's name, and a not-so-nice name meaning wouldn't stop me from using it. If I was looking for a name with a specific meaning for some reason, then obviously that would stomp out a lot of names for me.

I don't mind season themed names being "out of season" when the child is born. It's not like I go up to people named Autumn and ask "Were you born in autumn?!" Chances are, no one will even know the difference or care, for that matter.

I love Noel, by the way.

And I'm also due in June. :)

Ha, my name is April and I absolutely get the "Were you born in April?" question all the time... (I wasn't by the way- July for me) So yeah I just want to say, "And if I wasn't would you stop talking to me?" I don't get it. I even met another April once and SHE asked me. WTF?!

I love Kennedy and Cameron but never really cared about the meanings. I'm sure there are tons of others that have bad meanings that I love as well. Oh well!

It's a middle name and plus it's not as obvious as April, Autumn, December and such. Use it!

I have this same issue with Cameron. I had liked it for a long time, so I was really disappointed when I learned what it meant.

I wanted to name my girl Kylie until i read that it meant 'boomerang' it kinda disappointed me because i like to have nice meanings for the name...so we arent going to use that anymore
now we are leaning towards Danielle which means 'god is my judge'... then as a middle name Grace which means 'beautiful elegant' ..
the meanings dont go together but they sound good...and the meanings arent too weird...
my name is bridgette 'strong and spirited' jayne 'god is gracious' so in a way they match, i am not in any way religious but both our names have some reference to god and a personality type description..
As long as you are happy with the name and how it sounds the meaning shouldnt really matter (but pregnancy hormones do make you want to have the perfect meaning and the name to be perfect too)

Lol my brother's name is Cameron and I still love it.
I will use it for one of my future children because it is a family name, and I think that meaning is kind of cute. Name meanings don't really bother me all that much.
