....love a name but dispise the shortened version?

For example, my name is Jillian.  I love it.  But most people, of course, shorten it to Jill.  I don't mind it, I've gotten use to it but deep down I think it's too short, plain and boring!  I'm so glad I have Jillian to go by professionally.

Have you come across any names that irk you like this?

Edward.

I didn't think I liked it for the longest time, but I've decided recently that I do, quite a lot. It's just Ed that I have a problem with.

IAWTC. I hate Ed and Eddie, but love Edward, which is why I'll probably use it as a middle name

My step-sons' mother's name is Annaliese (Ahn-a-leese), and everyone calls her Anna. I love her first name as it is.

Also, my own name. I love my full name, Tabitha, but hate Tabby.

My sister's name is Jill and both she and my mom, in retrospect, wish she'd done Jillian with Jill as a nn.

I'm Katherine but actually prefer Kate by a long shot...which is what I go by. I realllly get annoyed when people take the liberty to nn me Katie or Kat or Kathy or something else like that.

I like Madeline (mad-eh-line) but I really really don't like Maddy.

I like Alexander or even Alex but not Al.

Well, I'm a little different with my actual first name. It's not that I dislike it but I don't think it suits me. So I prefer the shortened version. But as for names where I like the full version but dislike the shortened version...

I like Nicholas but dislike Nick
I like Alexander but dislike Al (Alex is fine)
I like Gabriel but dislike Gabe
I like Katherine but dislike Katie

Those are the ones I can think off of the bat.

That's exactly what my best friend says (she had a baby girl in the spring and named her Elizabeth). I don't mind Beth, but I've always LOVED Lizzie as a nickname.

We liked Eden for a girl- but, then I started thinking "Edie" and we decided against it

I love Emmaline, but hate Emma.
On the flip side, I love Gabe, but hate Gabriel.

Ditto! I wouldn't go as far as saying I hate Gabriel, but I'm really not a fan. Gabe, however, I LOVE.

Many, and its always something I think about when choosing names. For instance, I love Catherine, but despise Cathy. Love Samantha, but hate Sam.

My name is Nicolette, and I get called Nic a lot by family mostly, which I can deal with, but I dont like it.

My daughter's name is Catherine, and we have always called her by her full name. I hope she never decides to go by the nickname Cathy. It makes me think of that annoying comic strip.

I love Nicholas, but hate Nick so I probably won't use it. My son is Asher and gets called Ash sometimes (which I loved while pregnant) and I'm not sure I like Ash anymore.

we were very close to naming our son Christian after a close friend but i hated the thought of him being called chris so much we decided against it.

I had a very similar thought. Then I met a Christian who went by Kit, and I liked it so much that it's back on my list - unless I end up using Evangeline for a girl (which goes from being top of my list to right off of it depending on the mood I'm in) because I think Evangeline and Christian make a rather hardcore sibset!

also, i despise the nickname allie, so am pretty much repelled by anything that could be an extended version... allison, alexandra, etc.

also Cassandra, Jacqueline, and Samantha.
and for William I can only tolerate Billy, and on a little boy.

Yes!

I love Harriet, Louisa, Michael, and James, but I HATE all of the nicknames for Harriet (except Etta), I don't like Lou, and I don't like Mike. I also HATE the name Jim. I do like Jamie, but I don't know that it'd work on an adult the way Jim is used.

My cousin's daughter is Gabriella, which I think is pretty, but they call her Gabby. If they wanted to shorten it, I think Ella would be better!

ugh I hate the name Gabby, but I do like Gabrielle/Gabriella. I once knew a girl named Gabrielle who was called Abbey! much better.

Usually I like nicknames and hate the full names, but there are some exceptions. For example, I like Emmeline but not Emma or Emmy. That's all I can think of for now.

My name IS a shortened version (well, a pet name, anyway) - Megan. I asked my mom a couple weeks ago why she didn't name me Margaret and call me Megan. She said she almost did but changed her mind. GRRRRR. I don't feel like a Megan and wish I had Margaret to fall back on.

In any case, I vastly prefer Megan to Meg, which I find horrid. The only person who was ever allowed to call me that was my dad (well, it was usually Megs, but close enough). No one else. I hate it so so much. Luckily very few people actually try to call me that.

I want to call my daughter Abigail and not shorten it to Abby. I have a feeling I'll lose the battle with that one!

My daughter is Alexandra and I strongly dislike Al, Alex, and Lexi as nicknames. She almost always goes by her full name with the rare 'A', 'Alexa' or 'Xandra/Xandy' thrown in.

I also don't like the nickname Pat for my Patrick, much prefer Ricky

And, my husband is Jonathan, and so many of his high school friends send him letters to 'Johnny'. That irritates me the most.

I'm with a lot of others on here who love James but hate Jim or Jimmy.
I like Harrison and I used to dislike Harry, but I've come to terms with the fact that a Harrison would probably be called Harry by some, and it's not SO bad.

I love James and William but I do not like the nicknames Jim/Jimmy and Bill/Billy (though I like Bill a bit on it's own. Weird, huh?). I just don't quite understand how you get those nn from those names. Same goes with Edward->Ted but Ted I actually like.
