[identity profile] benebess.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
First time posting here,
i was wondering what you guys think of the name Laurence, but for a girl... ?
i personally love it, but my sister and some others said it was no good. :P

also:
I am writing a fantasy story and my main character is a boy named Elliot.
I need a second and last name for him, any ideas?
He is a modern kid, aged 16. Not from the old times or anything... just something simple and nice sounding.
Hope it's okay to post this here. :)

Laurence is a boys name. Laura/Lauren/Laurel/etc. are girls names.

And your sister is right :)

If it's for a character you could always call her Laurie and just never say what that's short for.

'Lawrence' is the sirname spelling, 'Laurence' is the forename spelling. I don't know it any other way =/

I'm half french, and the french side of my family don't get why you'd call a girl Laurence with all the masculine connotations.

(Appologies, we're a family very into names, and this comment intrested me so i read it out.)

Oh no! I knew you didn't mean that, i just find that facinating. It's why i love names so much, in different areas, a single name is popular for a certain gender. Not just a country.

Oh gosh, my spelling is so bad today =/

Yes, it's a boys' name. Although if this is for a character and it's a name that makes sense for the family/time-period/social setting/geographic location, I'd say pretty much anything goes. Not for a real daughter, though.

Elliot Andrew was the first thing that came to mind. I'm no good with character last names, but try this site (http://www.last-names.net/).

I think you should have the surname Frey. I like it.

My brother is a Laurence, it just doesn't suit a girl.

It comes from the Latin for laurel, the one Apollo wore in particular. It's a very masculine name.

A Dutch princess (I'm Dutch) is called Eloise, but her full name is Eloise Sophie Beatrix Laurence. They pronounce Laurence the French way though. That way, I consider it a girl's name, but pronounced the English way, it's a boy's name to me.

As for your story...

Elliot Christopher
Elliot Roman
Elliot Noah
Elliot Robin
Elliot Lucas

For a last name, I was thinking something like Morgan or Thomas.
