(no subject)

My kid sister brought home her school newspaper today and I flipped through it out of interest. One of the articles was by a kid who talked about how he and his 3 brothers and father all prononuced their names the same way; they were just spelled differently.

Dad: Bryan
Kids: Brien, Brian, Bryn, and Briean

The dad also talked about why they chose the names: it made them feel closer.

I swear.

What...teh..fwuck?

[identity profile] farting-nora.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
That is terrible. :(

[identity profile] sarahrose.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It made them all feel closer?!?!?

Yeah, in the big white padded room, maybe.

So when you're picking a name before a kid is born, or just after, you're predicting the future as well now, according to the dad.

Whoa. What happens when someone calls on the phone? How do they know whom they are calling for?

[identity profile] beepandetch.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Wow.

Bryn should be pronounced "Brin". I don't even see where you can make two syllables out of that one.

"Bry-n"?

I...don't know.

[identity profile] ex-bluebonn.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. Bryn is a total outcast in this lot - not to mention that I prefer Bryn on girls anyhow.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I was thinking that. If you're going to just use a different name and say it's pronounced Brian why not go the whole hog and spell it T-O-M?

We had a collie called Bryn. Purebred Welsh Border Collie

There was a girl I went to Elementry school with named Cassandra that said both her sisters were named Cassandra too, but her mom called them CeeCee, Sandra and Cassie

[identity profile] indicinderelly.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
At least they all have different nicknames.

[identity profile] invisiblepet.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's just arrogant.

[identity profile] solagirl.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder if the mom feels left out. How in the world do they get anything done?

"Hey hon, Brian is sick. I told Bryn to go to the store and Brein is taking Brian to the doctor. I haven't heard from Brien, so I am a little worried."

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
egotistical much?

[identity profile] illsmileforyou.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I knew a family w/ five kids. The dad and the kids all had names that were variations of "Chris". Christian, Christina, Christopher, etc. I think the mom was the only non-Chris.

You also feel closer to someone that you've been trapped in an elevator with for 17 hours, but i don't see anyone doing that. And it might be better for your overall health than being Bryan 3.0. Geez. I mean seriously, i don't feel closer to someone who has my name. Most of the time i hate them as a matter of fact.
pick a Bryan, any Bryan....

[identity profile] smallandneedy.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
so how the hell did they manage to find out which one was being called?
by calling them brian 1, 2, 3 and 4 or something? :\

[identity profile] stellarichards6.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
george forman would approve.

[identity profile] waitingonsunday.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I hope that father's unfamiliar with the idea of incest. "But, honey! It will bring us closer to the children!"

The only pro to this that I can think of offhand is that your parents would never accidentally call you by your sibling's name, at least. And I guess any of their girlfriends could cheat on them with any of their siblings without fear of calling someone by the wrong name during sex.

Although I suppose that's more of a con for the Brians.

There is a US figure skater named Naomi Nari Nam whose sister is name Naomi Nami Nam (parents liked the name Naomi so much they used it twice). My neighbour's best friend in high school was a girl named Caitlin who had a sister named Kaitlyn (same parents). I also know a girl named Emily who has a half sister named Emily (same dad, different moms).

[identity profile] laminy.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've decided there should be a law against that. You cannot give siblings the same names. Because then you end up with this, and two Prince Michaels, and five Georges. And a Georgetta.

[identity profile] scintillated.livejournal.com 2008-10-09 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh.

[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com 2008-10-10 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought nothing was bad about the sisters being named Kaitlyn and Kathrynne. Spellings aside, this the parents realize they were giving their girls the same name (albeit in different languages)?

By the posts, this seems more common than we thought! I know a family that is Stephen/Stephanie/Stephane
