My kid sister brought home her school newspaper today and I flipped through it out of interest. One of the articles was by a kid who talked about how he and his 3 brothers and father all prononuced their names the same way; they were just spelled differently.

Dad: Bryan
Kids: Brien, Brian, Bryn, and Briean

The dad also talked about why they chose the names: it made them feel closer.

I knew a family w/ five kids. The dad and the kids all had names that were variations of "Chris". Christian, Christina, Christopher, etc. I think the mom was the only non-Chris.

You also feel closer to someone that you've been trapped in an elevator with for 17 hours, but i don't see anyone doing that. And it might be better for your overall health than being Bryan 3.0. Geez. I mean seriously, i don't feel closer to someone who has my name. Most of the time i hate them as a matter of fact.

Wow, I hope that father's unfamiliar with the idea of incest. "But, honey! It will bring us closer to the children!"

The only pro to this that I can think of offhand is that your parents would never accidentally call you by your sibling's name, at least. And I guess any of their girlfriends could cheat on them with any of their siblings without fear of calling someone by the wrong name during sex.

Although I suppose that's more of a con for the Brians.

There is a US figure skater named Naomi Nari Nam whose sister is name Naomi Nami Nam (parents liked the name Naomi so much they used it twice). My neighbour's best friend in high school was a girl named Caitlin who had a sister named Kaitlyn (same parents). I also know a girl named Emily who has a half sister named Emily (same dad, different moms).

By the posts, this seems more common than we thought! I know a family that is Stephen/Stephanie/Stephane
