Thoughts on Alliteration
Sep. 9th, 2008 02:58 pmAfter hearing a friend of mine talk about a name he likes for his future daughter, I got to thinking about alliteration.
He likes the name Tabitha. His last name is Thomas. Tabitha Thomas.
I don't know why but that just bugs me. I typically don't mind alliteration (I've got a friends whose initials are CC and it doesn't bother me) but this one has really got me in a tizzy.
Feelings on alliteration? Any combo of letters drive you up a wall?

Edit: I just went through my Facebook friends, and there are actually a lot more alliterations than I remembered ... I guess that shows how not annoying it is to me, when I didn't even notice so many of them!

Date: 2008-09-09 09:27 pm (UTC)Here what's hard is the repeat Th that is pronounced one way in Tabitha and a different way in Thomas. Although it would be worse still if it were the same sound as TabiTHa twice.
A woman where I worked was Beatrice B. and I used to think it was redundant, but these days I'm all over Kill Bill, so B.B. sound very appealing.
I like L.L. and M.M. for alliterations.

Date: 2008-09-09 11:21 pm (UTC)For example, Tabitha Thomas might be a bit worse because it's TA-bitha THOM-as, whereas Teresa Tomonaga (te-RE-sa to-mo-NA-ga) doesn't stress the alliterative syllables.
