After hearing a friend of mine talk about a name he likes for his future daughter, I got to thinking about alliteration.

He likes the name Tabitha. His last name is Thomas. Tabitha Thomas.

I don't know why but that just bugs me. I typically don't mind alliteration (I've got a friends whose initials are CC and it doesn't bother me) but this one has really got me in a tizzy.

Feelings on alliteration? Any combo of letters drive you up a wall?

I actually don't know all that many people who have the same initials in the first and last names. Most of the ones that I can think of are fictional, especially from Harry Potter (which I love).

That being said, I kind of like it, most of the time. And I do like the example of Tabitha Thomas. I like it better when there aren't also a lot of similar sounds within the name itself, in addition to those first initials.

Edit: I just went through my Facebook friends, and there are actually a lot more alliterations than I remembered ... I guess that shows how not annoying it is to me, when I didn't even notice so many of them!

It drives me nuts! I just don't like it for some reason, and never have. Tabitha Thomas would bug me too. I immediately crossed all names starting with H off of my list when DH and I started wedding planning.

Both my husband (Sean S___) and his father (Steve S___) have alliterative names, and those have never bothered me, but most of the time it does.
It's very easy for alliterative names to sound too cutesey.

I'm not a fan, but after not being able to agree on any names for boys last pregnancy, we ended up with alliteration because the only name we did agree on started with the same letter as our last name. this time, we aren't even considering any names that start with that letter.

It depends on the particular name. Sometimes it's annoying; sometimes it can actually sound good. Tabitha Thomas isn't horrible, but it reminds me of a children's book character or something.

I'm not against alliteration per se, but sometimes I'll think it's redundant.
Here what's hard is the repeat Th that is pronounced one way in Tabitha and a different way in Thomas. Although it would be worse still if it were the same sound as TabiTHa twice.

A woman where I worked was Beatrice B. and I used to think it was redundant, but these days I'm all over Kill Bill, so B.B. sound very appealing.

I like L.L. and M.M. for alliterations.

I'm Samaria Sari, and though my last name does not begin with an 'S,' I'm a firm believer that alliteration can and often does work well. It depends on the two names in question.

I think it depends on the circumstance. Some work, some don't. Most remind me of new reports for some reason. My boyfriend's last name begins with A and for some reason alot of my favorite names begin with A and I'm concerned about that as well.

I generally don't mind alliteration as much if the stressed syllable isn't the one with the repeated consonant sound.

For example, Tabitha Thomas might be a bit worse because it's TA-bitha THOM-as, whereas Teresa Tomonaga (te-RE-sa to-mo-NA-ga) doesn't stress the alliterative syllables.

I really like it a lot, but I'm partial. I just lost a very close friend named Tabitha who was a light in a dark world for many people. But I DO like the way it sounds. What would be the middle name?

idk, i like alliteration. that may be because 3 of the guys i've really like(d) all have the initials of MM...all 3 of them. and they all have double letters in their last names. like me. and the letter that is doubled in my last name is the letter M. ha. anyway.

I like alliteration with boys names for some reason...it seems sort of comic book-esque.

I have an alliterating name, and it has never bothered me. In fact, I think it's kind of awesome =).

The only thing I don't like, is if alliterating names repeat the same sound...like Harry Harrison, or something.

I dont know why, but alliteration with names bugs me something chronic. I think it's almost cruel...out of all the letters in the alphabet, all the thousands upon thousands of names..
Having said that, I love the name Callan for a boy, and current partner's surname is Carmody. I don't like the combination, and so would never use it, but still love Callan. Luckily for me, we're not TTC!

Tabitha Thomas actually doesn't sound so bad to me. I think alliteration mainly becomes cheesy or off-sounding if a lot of the same sounds beyond the first letter are repeated. Apparently I was almost Vanessa Vas, & I'm really glad my parents decided against it - too much of the same for my taste.
