Alaska Lucille

I know, I know, I KNOWWWW, Alaska is the name of a state, not a person, but seriously, I can't get this name out of my head. I posted about it a few weeks ago, and generally, people hated it, but still, bear with me. For those who didn't see my post, I read a book, "Looking For Alaska" by John Green, and it has had some serious effects on me. In addition, I've always wanted to go to Alaska, always, I think it'd be so beautiful and wonderful there.

So, basically, Alaska has a lot of strong connotations for me. The book really did change my life, and the state is someplace I've been dying to go for honestly, a very long LONG time.

I mean, people name their kid's places all the time. London, Dakota, so is Alaska really that out of place?

And how about just the combo, Alaska Lucille. Yay or nay?

Thank youuu!

If you forget that it's a state it does sound really pretty. What if you switched them around? Lucille Alaska. You could still call her Alaska, but at least that way she would have a more traditional name to fall back on. :)

my cousins name is dakota :) shes 2 i think. Its not my favorite but its ok. they call her coco and sometimes curly coco cuz of her and her twin shes got curly hair and her twin ashley has straiiiiight hair.

I really dislike the name lucille, its def not my style but I dont think it sounds bad with Alaska. as for alaska itself, I dont mind it, though I do think its a litttle different than naming a kid dakota. I do kinda think mostly of the state tho.

I think that if it has meaning for you, you should go ahead and use it.

What about doing two middles if you really like the combo, as in Marie Alaska Lucille or Elizabeth Alaska Lucille or SOMETHING... Not even necessarily because Alaska's a state, but because what would her friends call her, Al?

I actually quite like a lot of place names, although very few of the ones that are actually popular. I HATE Dakota. I probably wouldn't actually ever use a name like this on a child of my own, but if I did it would have to be in a situation where, like you, the place itself had some really important significance to me, and not just because the name sounds good. But it would also have to do that.

That being said, I do think Alaska is kind of a pretty name. It looks a little bit harsh written down, but I think it sounds nice. I really really hate the name Lucille, though, so that particular combo is a no for me. I'm usually pretty bad at coming up with middle names, since I expect to use mostly family names as middle names on my future kids, but it struck me that Louise would be a pretty middle name in this instance.

If I saw a little girl named Alaska i would think it was cute and I definitely wouldn't think the mother was an idiot for calling her that. But then again, I like the name India and a lot of people dont.

i've never heard alaska before. as a word, i think it sounds nice, but it is a state..and if i saw it in a birth announcement or something, i'd probably think: ...what..

i like lucille though. why not use alaska as a middle name instead of a first?

That somehow makes the name ten times more awesome.

OP: It's all about the meaning. If it's meaningful, go for it. We're planning to use Delta as a first name.

She could go by Alli also.

Actually, in a strange way, I love it. (which is weird because I do not love the state!) Although, just because kids tend to need to come up with reasons for hating their parents, I like whoever added Lucy Alaska, or Lucia Alaska or Lucille Alaska. I think Lucy Alaska is my fav.

Alaska is a guilty pleasure of mine ;) And I completely agree with you, if people name their kids India & London, then you could also name yours Alaska. I think Alaska Lucille sounds good!

I like Alaska, and Lucy, but not sure about Lucille. I agree with changing the order, so Alaska is the second name, as otherwise it sounds a bit Punxsutawney Phil-ish, if you see what I mean?

Alice Alaska would be pretty.

I guess I'd feel more willing to give the name a pass if you'd actually been to Alaska and found it profound and meaningful somehow. I think it's harder to explain a weird name when you're explanation is "I want to visit there."

I like it as a middle name, but then I like just about anything as a middle.

It makes me want to throw up a little as a first name. You're absolutely right: it's no worse than Dakota or Alabama. It's just that those are retch-worthy, too, to me. Just... no. UGH. Ugh ugh ugh.

Well... in the book, Alaska is a flawed character and also got to pick her own name when she was a kid, right? So I guess choosing the name (in part) based on a book when those things are true seems a little weird.

And I like Lucy a lot better than Lucille, but I may be biased since that's my mom's name.

I did enjoy the book, very much. I wasn't meaning to minimize your experience with it; I just think it's important to be very critical of something, especially if you're going to make a permanent decision based on it (hypothetically). But yes, I liked the book and I'm still carrying around all the emotions that it make me feel.

OMG, I've never posted here before but I must say I LOVE ALASKA LUCILLE!!

It sounds lovely, feminine and has great flow together. You have great taste and I truly hope you bless a child with this name.

Plus, her pet name can be Allie and how cute is that?!?

Honestly? I actually really like it.

I think that names should be full of meaning, not picked because they're considered "normal" and "acceptable". Of course there are limits and lines that should not be crossed. And everyone has his or her own personal tastes and opinions on what names are "good" ones. But it's ultimately your choice, and I think that you could have chosen something much, MUCH worse. :o)

Weighing in pretty late, I know. I think "Alaska Lucille" is pretty strange. Alaska has connotations of a vast cold wilderness, Lucille evokes fancy dresses and Lucille Ball. In addition, it looks like a descriptor, like Texas Pete or Injun Joe. Or even worse, Eskimo Nell.

*imagines various uses*
"Alaska is cutting her first tooth!"
"Hi, I'm Alaska, would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?"
"ALASKA LUCILLE SMITH, WOULD YOU CLEAN UP THIS ROOM."
"Nice to meet you, Allie. Is that short for Allison or Alexandra?"
"If Mississippi lent Missouri her New Jersey, what did Delaware? I don't know, Alaska!"
"What's the capital of Alaska? Juneau! I don't know. Do JU KNOW, Alaska?"
"Do you, Alaska Lucille, take this man..."
"Now on the scene, news reporter Alaska L. Smith, over to you, Alaska."
"Doctor Alaska L. Smith"
"Grandma Alaska"

It's your choice, but I vote no.
