SSA Popular Baby Names

Jacob is number one for boys, Emily is number one for girls. Respectable, traditional names, yay. Naveah has been pushed to number 31 from #43 (*cringe*), Aidan has fallen ten spaces (but Aiden has risen five),  Madison has fallen two spaces (still in top ten), and Jayden has gone from number 49 to 18 (not surprising, but no less unfortunate).

i love ethan and andrew but none of the other boys names, and for girls i really like emily, emma, abigail, and elisabeth.

that being said, i even worked in a daycare for a year and i know tons of people with kids AND i have very young siblings, i've never met a little girl named olivia.

Jacob and Emily were also number 1 in 1991, the year my sister was born. Her name is Emily and her best friend in elementary school was Jacob. My mom alsway thought that was so funny that they were both the top names and I was like "Well if they're the most popular names there's a greater chance that there will be Jacobs and Emilys to be friends with each other right?"

Oh, I take that back, it was 1999, one of the years the two of them had class together.

I like Isabel but not Isabella, Eva but not Ava, Sophie but not Sophia.

I like Jake but not Jacob.

I can't say I'm really into the top 10 for either sex. The boys' name sound particularly biblical.

I am shocked Jack is not on there. Every other kid I meet is named Jack...

Anthony seems out of place to me. I never notice this name on anyone's top name lists, I never run into little kids by that name, I never hear of anyone calling their kid that, and that's something I can't say about any of the other names out of these twenty. The only reason I think I'm even noticing it is because that's what my boyfriend wants to name our firstborn son (supposing we have any, way off in the future), so now when I see it anywhere, my ears kind of perk up.

True, but Anthony is extremely common in Italian families.

Not one bit surprised by any of those. Just glad to see that Jayden didn't break the top ten.

Nothing too shocking. I was kind of surprised that Jack and Aiden weren't ranked higher, but if you look at the ranks for Jack and Jackson, and Aiden and Aidan, combined they'd be a lot further up the list.

Also, Addison is #11. If I had seen Addison in the top ten, I might have screamed. There's always next year!

I find it interesting, particularly in comparison with the UK ones (given below for the curious). My daughter was born in February 2007 and her name is decreasing in popularity in both countries, while my son Owen's is going down here but up in the US (though still out of the top 50 there). You can see from the British Boy chart than boys names change so very little while girl name popularities are all over the place here.

Yeah, the US boys' list is a lot more stable than the US girls' list, too. I think it's because parents feel more comfortable about experimenting with girls' names - boys need strong names so that they can become successful, respectable captains of industry whereas girls, if they don't succeed, can just marry a rich husband? Something like that, I'm sure.

I am in the middle of going through the list and I saw that Brenda came right after Miley. I am shocked because i always think of it as a 60's name, but that is probably because my aunt is named Brenda and she was born in 1962/63. She is also pregnant and I'm dying to know what she names the baby because she had her last kid 19 years ago and surely hers and my uncle's name tastes have changed since then.

Oh no, Isabella! I don't plan on having children for another decade or so, but it still kind of upsets me that Isabella is so popular. I love that name to pieces, and the fact that it's so popular makes me feel like I shouldn't use it.

Jacob, Ethan, William, Emily, Isabella, Ava, Sophia, Olivia, and Elizabeth are all on my list.

girl: Olivia 1 out of 10 (but there is an emily and ava for siblings)

I never really thought of it as a popular name.

Crap, my name's still #1. It pisses me off beyond belief that my parents named me Emily. Ughhhhh.

The top 10 really aren't too bad. I hate Madison, and I don't like Isabella, Emma, or Ava very much, but I looooove Emily, Sophia, Elizabeth, Michael, Anthony, William, Matthew, and Andrew.

I'm not at all surprised about any of these.

My names are all pretty decent places on the list:
Juliet - 516
Alice - 364
Lily - 27 (ugh)
Eliza - 334
Louisa - not listed
Charles - 62
Henry - 91
Samuel - 25
William - 8

So not horrible. The girls names are all low, except Lily, and only two of the boy names are in the top 50. I don't mind popularity much, so whatever.

I know very few young (girl) children with any of these names. I know a 15 year old Emma. A 17 year old Madison. I'm always surprised that the little kids I meet always have names from like, two generations ago.

So... I had time on my hands, so I went through the list and tried to find all the Aidan's and all it's variants like Brayden, Hayden, Jayden... I came up with a total of 100,977. Woah. That also includes girls who were named Jayden/Kayden/Hayden

This makes me sad because my top girl names are Emma and Hannah, and I don't think I could use 'em with them being that popular. :( I also love Isabel lately (uber-close to Isabella).
