Jan. 24th, 2006 05:33 pmI dont have any kids and am not pregnant...yet. The boyfriend and I are hoping for kids in the next year or so, after I've finished uni.
We've already got the names picked (a bit ahead of ourselves) and I was wondering what people thought. We love them but we've had mixed reactions...
Boy:
Kacey William Alexandar
- William after my grandad
-Alexandar after my dad's step-dad and my great grandad
Girl:
Bethan Raen Alexandria
- Raen standing for Rapley Ansley Elizabeth Nicholson (all family names)
- Alexandria after a friend of my boyfriend
or
Eva-Rei Elizabeth
- Eva-Rei pronounced Ay-va Ray
- Elizabeth is a family name
Opinions?

Date: 2006-01-24 10:04 am (UTC)Eva-Rei pronounced Ay-va Ray If it's pronounced that way I'd spell it that way:
Ava-Rei, or better yet:
Ava-Rae.
Otherwise she will always be called "Eee-vuh Ray."

Date: 2006-01-24 10:16 am (UTC)I like either spelling but I always though Casey looked more feminine.
Eva and Rei are both names I heard in an anime I watched and really like the sound of them. That's the way they're spelt in that but I like the way Ava-Rei looks. Not too keen on the Rae, it's too close to Raen so it would just end up Ava-Raen.
Yea, I dunno what my point was there either lol

Date: 2006-01-24 11:34 am (UTC)it happens but hey.. i know its the correct way of spelling and pronouncing it, i am a lil keen on ava but i prefer eva.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:49 am (UTC)However, after years of correcting people (both on spelling and pronunciation), I gave up. I now introduce myself as Eva (Ee-va) just to make it easier. Only my family and close friends pronounce my name the original way.
It's very annoying. I don't recommend it.

Date: 2006-01-24 12:08 pm (UTC)There's a few people that know me as Lorna because I cannot be bothered correcting them for the 5000th time. Usually it only takes one correction and I don't mind that.
Some people are just dumb, or don't listen more likely!

Date: 2006-01-24 11:00 am (UTC)Alexandar is with an A because my dad's step-dad was Alexander and my great grandad was Alexanda. It's a compromise.
Eva, as I said in the comment above, is the way it was spelt and pronounced in the anime I heard it in. Bethan Raen Alexandria is our first choice for a girl anyway so Eva-Rei will probably change by the time/if we have our second/third child. I just like it for now :)

Date: 2006-01-24 11:06 am (UTC)I don't really like Bethan at all, though I like Raen. And I lovelovelove Eva-Rei. But if you are going to prounounce it ava, you should probably spell it that way, or she's going to be correcting people all the time.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:14 am (UTC)Bethan is from the James Herbert book "Once...". In the book she was a faerie who fell in love with and married a soldier meaning she became half human. They had a child but her husband died. She couldn't live as a human without his love and she couldn't go back to living as a faerie so she died. I really like the book and Bethan's story so I like the name. Elizabeth is also a family name and Beth or Bethan are the only variations I like of it as a first name.
Eva is the Japanese spelling as is Rei but I understand the misprounouncing thing. It's something to think about.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:08 am (UTC)Eva-Rei looks like it'd be pronounced Ee-va Rye to me. I'd do Ava Rae. The Rei part isn't as big of a deal though. But definitely Ava.
I like William Alexandar (and I love the spelling now that I read the story behind it) and I'd have him go by Alex, but I don't like Kacey. At least I'd spell it Casey if I used it, it looks more masculine.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:23 am (UTC)Eva-Rei is the Japanese spelling, as I heard it in an anime. Still don't know if it will be used as it's not our first choice for a girls name.
I don't really like the name Alex. I knew a girl at school called Alex and I hated her. Really put me off the name.
The spelling Casey is starting to grow on me but I knes a girl called Casey so I've always associated that spelling with a girl's name. I originally liked Corey but it's co popular and it's my brother's future nephews name.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:12 am (UTC)Bethan looks incomplete. I think you should either go with Bethany or Bethann. I'm not crazy about Raen, but if you're going to use it, just use that without a second middle name.
I like the name Eva and the way you have it pronounced is the correct way, at least in Spanish. I don't like Rei at all. if you want to use it, I'd at least spell it Rae (the feminine form of Ray). But if I were you I'd just go with Eva Elizabeth.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:28 am (UTC)I actually really like Bethann, not too keen on Bethany though.
I love Raen as all the names that make it up mean a lot to me. Unfortunately I don't like it as a first name.
Eva and Rei are both the Japanese spellings and pronounciations but, as I've said in other comments, it probably wont be used anyway as Bethan/Bethann Raen is the first choice for a girl :)

Date: 2006-01-24 11:36 am (UTC)The spelling of Kacey isn't what gets me, I just don't like the name. I've known some real assholes named Casey/Kacey/Kasey and wouldn't want to associate any child of mine with that. But if you haven't had that problem, go for it.
And technically neither Eva nor Rei are Japanese spellings because they don't use our alphabet. That's just how they were transliterated at some point, so as long as the pronunciation was the way you liked it, you could mess with those spellings some.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:54 am (UTC)True about the Japenese spellings but I think that's the way it's usually translated into the english language. I prefer Rei as Rae is too close to Raen.

Date: 2006-01-24 11:20 am (UTC)Boy:
Kacey William Alexandar
Kacey is more mascaline than Casey, sorry casey is a girly spelling and i think Kacey is more mascaline imo, Willian and Alexandar are both fine, i prefer that spelling as its something different.
Girl:
Bethan Raen Alexandria
Bethan is a name my girlfriend likes and i love it, Raen for the reasons and same for Alexandria, i love both names and i think they flow fine.
Eva-Rei Elizabeth
Eva is the japanese spelling for Eva and how it is pronounced, I love japanese names and culture, also love the double barrel of the Eva-Rei and Rei is also the fenamine and japanses spelling for Ray/Rae, Rae is also japenese but i prefer Rei as it's what i've know and loved for years,
thanks for the imput and opinions guys :D

Date: 2006-01-24 02:09 pm (UTC)William- Don't especially like but it's not bad. I think Billy is a much better nn that Will.
Alexandar- I like this name a lot, but is the 'ar' at the end purposely misspelt?
Girl:
Bethan- I dont like Bethan at all. I prefer Bethany.
Raen- Pronounced Rain? hmm this is weird...
Alexandria- Yes this is pretty, if not a bit 'ra-ra' but i like it.
or
Eva-Rei- I like Eva but it is most commonly pronounced ee-va, Ava is a seperate name (which i happen to prefer) Just go with one or the other, Eva pronounced Ava is annoying. Rei is awful... dont stick that on the end, just use it as a middle name.
Elizabeth- Love it, but I dont care for any nn apart from Elle.

Date: 2006-01-24 02:27 pm (UTC)I don't like William as a first name but I need it in there somewhere so middle name it is.
I actually like the -dar for Alexandar. Both names (-da and -der) are important and it would feel like I was chosing to honor one over the other. Just in my personal opinion.
Bethan's explanation is in a comment above. I'm not too keen on Bethany but I like the suggested spelling Bethann.
Raen is pronounced more like Rayen.
Alexandria I really like aswell.
Eva-Rei most likely wont be used as Bethan Raen is the first choice girls name but I like it.
The only nn I like for Elizabeth is Beth or Bethan/Bethann, hence the choice of first name as I don't really like Elizabeth in full as a first name. It's my middle name.
Thanks for your comment. I like hearing other peoples opinions even if they don't change my own very often :)

Bethan Raen is the first choice girls name anyway so Eva-Rei probably wont be used. Just throwing it out there because we both like it.

Date: 2006-01-24 07:50 pm (UTC)Bethan Raen Alexandria -- I like Raen is a stretch, personally. Cramming in everyname in your tree kind of dilutes the honor imo. But hey, I'm kind of strict on stuff like that. Otherwise sounds like a fine combo to me.
Eva-Rei Elizabeth -- I personally prefer the AY-va pronunciation too, but I know most won't say it that way, not in the U.S. anyway. Otherwise a fine combo.

Date: 2006-01-25 02:45 am (UTC)Also, I will most likely call him Kace and Case written down is just suitcase to me.
I originally wanted to call a girl Rapley Ansley Elizabeth Nicholson, Nicholson being my sn, but decided I hated Rapley as a first name and it just sounded wrong so I just kind of squished it and fell in love with it.

Date: 2006-01-26 10:54 am (UTC)Speaking as a teacher, try to spell your child's name the way you want it pronounced. It's very difficult reading roll call when a name is spelled one way and pronounced another. Many people will call your Eva, Eva not Ava. Letters that make similar sounds are not that big of a deal, that's more of a preference. I think the most difficult is the vowel sounds.
Good luck at finding something you like! :)
