[identity profile] chocolatee136.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm new to the community and I joined because I believe naming a child is a very important process and shouldnt be just blown off. I am not planning on having children until I am married, but the problem is that my parents hate every name that I like. My boyfriend is African American and has lived his whole life in Mississippi, and I was born and raised in Europe and have lived in New Hampshire for the past 8 years, which obviously poses a few cultural differences. My boyfriend and I have come up with several potential baby names, but my parents are having trouble accepting names other than John, Peter, Catherine, or Ann. I want to find names that I different and special, but at the same time, not too "out there"... basically, I like unique names and spellings and here are my current favorites. Let me know if you know any other good ones, or if you like or dislike these:

Girl names:

Amaiia Marlee
Delanii Viera (the middle name is my mothers name, pronounced riVIERA, LOL hard to explain, its European)

Boy names:

Atreiiu (can't come up with a good middle name at the time, it will most likely be a family members name)
Aliijah Michael (middle name after my grandfather)

WDYT?

whether a double i is special to you or not, you're still sentencing your child to a life where they have to spell their name for everyone and MOST LIKELY be met with an eye roll. you must have no idea how much people are judged by their name.

it's harder for women especially to get jobs if they have a certain name. for example, two people of the same age and race might apply for the same job, but depending on the job of course, most of the time the employer will hire a jessica or a katie before they hire a jesika or a kaetii. your name is one of your first impressions, and that is why it is so important to choose a name that not only ages well, but is presentable. you have to remember that you're naming another human being who is going to have a life of their own.

What? People are more likely to hire you if your name is "normal"? I think that's nonsense. You didn't name yourself, people don't hold that against you. Maybe a very small population of people might, but the majority of people aren't going to. That's asinine.

i'm not saying i agree with it, but it does happen. there have been studies and everything. i'm obviously not going to look one up for you, but i'm sure you can find something about it by googling. it's harder to take someone seriously when their name is spelled all funky.

It's been done; there have been research studies on it. If you hand employers the same exact resume, with the same names but different (traditional versus untraditional) spellings, the traditionally spelled name will get be more likely to be called for an interview.

Of course, there has been studies on every thing from every side of every story.

So we shouldn't believe any of them?

You can believe which one you want. And everyone else can believe whichever one they want. It's a personal opinion.

You're right, that IS nonsense...normal isn't even a valid reason to give a name IMO. I like creative names, I even made a girls name up (Aurahlin) that I like and was told that I shouldn't use it because it's not a "real" name.

Every name was made up by someone at some point, so I don't get why some people make such a big deal out of it. I mean, I can see how naming a kid tire or telephone as being pretty bad...but a variation on spelling really isn't something to get worked up over.

Thank you! I love it too...I hope some day I get to use it (not sure what I'm having yet).

I agree with you on generally disliking the dumb spellings, but seriously--this is a silly argument. it's just NOT that big a deal to have to spell your name out. my name is a perfectly common spelling and I have to do it all the time; it's not destroying me inside. it's not even that annoying.

I just have to comment saying I agree with you on the funky spellings being absolutely ridiculous, a friend of mine is currently 36 weeks pregnant and naming her baby girl Jessyka, it just hurts my eyes to look at. I do have to say that the spelling she chose is better than the other one she contemplated - Jesyka. Ouch, my eyes!
