[identity profile] chocolatee136.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm new to the community and I joined because I believe naming a child is a very important process and shouldnt be just blown off. I am not planning on having children until I am married, but the problem is that my parents hate every name that I like. My boyfriend is African American and has lived his whole life in Mississippi, and I was born and raised in Europe and have lived in New Hampshire for the past 8 years, which obviously poses a few cultural differences. My boyfriend and I have come up with several potential baby names, but my parents are having trouble accepting names other than John, Peter, Catherine, or Ann. I want to find names that I different and special, but at the same time, not too "out there"... basically, I like unique names and spellings and here are my current favorites. Let me know if you know any other good ones, or if you like or dislike these:

Girl names:

Amaiia Marlee
Delanii Viera (the middle name is my mothers name, pronounced riVIERA, LOL hard to explain, its European)

Boy names:

Atreiiu (can't come up with a good middle name at the time, it will most likely be a family members name)
Aliijah Michael (middle name after my grandfather)

WDYT?

how can you say you don't want the names to be too out there but then continue to post these? they're not even real names.

the double I HAS to go. it's confusing, completely pointless, and your kid will resent you because you're pretty much making it so that if they have to spell their name for everyone. it's seriously such a pain in the ass.

the names themselves, for the most part, are not that bad. but:
amaiia: amaya. i still don't like the name, but that is how it would be spelled.
delanii: delaney, i believe. i don't like this either, it seems like more of a surname.

atreiiu: is this said like a-tray-u? if so, there's already an awful band by that name, atreyu. i don't advise you name your child this, ever.
and finally, elijah is a great name. aliijah, completely destroys it.

I'm glad you found us :). I do think you'll find that here though, most people don't like weird names or spellings. I think there is a way to find names that not everybody has and that are special without making them up. But in the end, it only matters what you think about them!

those spellings practically made my eyes bleed. i'm sorry but they are TERRIBLE. why oh why would you want to set your kid up for a LIFETIME (yes, lifetime) of correcting people on the spelling of his/her name?! omg. those look so tacky.

it also matters what the kid is gonna think and what kid is gonna like having to spend a lifetime spelling their name for people?

Marley, Delaney, and Elijah are fine names. Amaya and Viera are ok.

Amaiia Marlee, Delanii, Atreiiu, and Aliijah are atrocious.

You say you aren't going to have kids before you're married, but yet in your bio you say you love your baby girl Amaya?

I like the sound of Delanii a lot. I like Atreyu as well, but it is hard to separate from the never ending story.

What is the significance of the double i?

John, Peter, Catherine and Ann are leagues better than these double-I names.

Giving your child a misspelled name that still has a regular, easier pronounced version does nothing but set the child up for lifetime of hardship. I'm serious. How often is a name written compared to called out? Amaiia is said the same as Amaya, so why bother with the "ii"? Same for all of them.

The double ii's make me feel like it is a screen name. I do kind of like Viera although.

Maybe you could do the ii thing as the middle name, if it has signifigance? And then do a more unusual but regularly spelled name as the first name.

For unusual names, I'd look at the top 1000 names from the Social Security Administration's website. The names at the top (#1, #2, etc.) are most popular and then down. You can also look at birth announcements in your area to see what's popular, so you can see what not to name your child. That way, your child gets an unusual name but it's still relatively normal.

For the most part, yes, that is my primary issue with the names. However, I would also dislike the names if they were spelled Amaia, Delani or Alijah.

So then why are you posting here?

I agree. Marlee Amaiia, for example, is a zillion times better than the other way around.
