(no subject)

I don't know how many of you watch America's Next Top Model, but this cycle had two Amy's so one of them had to change her name. She changed it to Amis (pr. "aim-miss"). Wdyt?

Personally, I like how it sounds, but the spelling looks like a typo of Amy... or multiple Amy's. Also, I just did a search on the name, and apparently it's the name of the indigenous people of Taiwan.

I watch ANTM sometimes (shhhh!). When I first saw the name I was hoping it would be pronounced "Am-iss", which is funky and offbeat and I actually like.

Otherwise it just reminds me of the boy's name Amos.

agreed.

Yeah, it reminds me of Amos too, but I kind of like it.

My first thought was the writer, Martin Amis. Having been subjected to his work as part of my uni course I'm not exactly crazy about the name by association.

In the abstract it's not too bad though.

i would automatically pronounce is like the french 'amis' - friends.
aim-miss? eh. that's just weird. and funny.

Amis Pronounced Amos

Agreed, it's terrible.

When I first saw it I too thought it was a take on the French, which would have been great. But with a pronunciation like Amos? Yech. Puritan, Biblical, and old English associations are not what you want to think of with a top model. It was a bad call.

Don't think she'll last very long anyway.

Moi aussi! I would pronounce it like the French.

:) Getting authentic.

"Ah-mi" might sound pretentious, but that's better than dull in the modeling world.

The way she is wanting it to be pronounced is in sound and reality too close to something gone amiss.

I thought 'Amish?' when I saw that. Hmm.

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she just shuffled around the letters of her name a bit and subtracted some (I think both girls on ANTM spelled their name Aimee)...I wish she had called herself Aims which sounds like a nick name for Aimee rather than Amis which sounds like a car rental company.

[identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny, Aimee & Amy are two completely different names to me.
Probably because we pronounce Aimee like Eh-MAY over here.

[identity profile] miss-tee.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a girl who pronounces it eh-MAY. I believe she is Romanian.
I know two other Aimee's that pronounce it like Amy.
However, I'm reasonably certain that the girls on ANTM say it like Amy.

[identity profile] 0o-faerie.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it makes a lot of sense in an English/American setting.

I'm fairly sure Eh-MAY is the French pronunciation, since it's their word for 'loved'.

[identity profile] furiosa.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a clip where she was telling the other girls why she chose Amis, because they were all "WTF?" (and understandably so). She said she picked it because it sounded like Amy, and it's from the Bible. I think she was thinking of Amos, but didn't know how to spell it, LOL.

[identity profile] politicking.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
haha i thought that, too! i was like "wait, AMOS maybe, but AMIS wasn't..."

[identity profile] arbus.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
i thought it was cute at first but she bugged me beyond belief when she was like "its in the bible!" and i was like "um, no it isnt. AMOS is, not amis. duh." i like amos on a boy, for what its worth.

[identity profile] istytehcrawk.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Why did she have to change her name? Is it really *that* hard to differentiate between two people with the same first name?

[identity profile] thejoysofjess.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It is for Tyra.

[identity profile] mimiwrites.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
At first I thought she said Amos. I don't really like it.

[identity profile] admirari.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
haha yeah amos. also, makes me think of seamus

[identity profile] djador.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't know she picked it because it was (apparently) in the bible, I just assumed it was a nickname or something. I have a friend named Amy and we have tons of dumb nicknames for her likes Ames, Amos and Amerson. I thought it was kind of like that. It seems a little more weird now.

[identity profile] solagirl.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Something seems amiss.

[identity profile] dustkitty.livejournal.com 2008-03-05 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's reminding me of Amos or the word "amiss". Neither are good on a girl.
