Misspelled names
Feb. 25th, 2008 10:57 pmDo you have a name/child's name that is frequently misspelled?
My name is Stacey and usually when someone tries to spell my name I get Stacy or the occasional Stacie. I'm sure there are even people with the name that spell it Stacee or Stasee or some other variations...
I like my name spelled the way it is. Stacy seems incomplete to me. It just gets really annoying sometimes having it constantly misspelled.

Seriously. It's endless. Let's not even start with the pronunciations.

Date: 2008-02-26 06:50 am (UTC)My daughter's name is Lily. Like the flower. I stupidly thought that such a simple sounding name would be just as simple for people to spell. Apparently not. I also didn't think that her name would become as wildly popular as it has. I didn't know anyone named Lily when my daughter was born almost 12 years ago.
Anyway, she gets Lilly, Lillie, Lilli, Lili. *sigh* At least it gets pronounced correctly. That's always a plus. ;)

Date: 2008-02-26 08:47 am (UTC)It doesn't really annoy me that much. I prefer my spelling of the name, but I know that 'Allison' is more popular, so I don't get really mad or anything if people spell it wrong. I'd rather have it spelt right, though, obviously. :P

Date: 2008-02-26 04:35 pm (UTC)Misspellings don't bother me either. What DOES bother me is that at work I now get "Casey," which is my new last name. People see it in my email address and plug it in for the first name--even though I always sign my emails with my full name. People I've known for two years before I got married have done this!

Know someone named Jeffry. Frankly, I really don't like that spelling. I feel like his parents just misspelled Jeffrey on the birth certificate and went with it from there.
Stacey and its variations is a hard one, it seems.

Date: 2008-02-26 11:40 am (UTC)Sophie is always misheard as Stacey, which (no offence!) but I've absolutely grown to detest.
I introduce myself as Sophia most of the time now, even though everyone calls me Sophie.. especially on the phone.

Date: 2008-02-26 12:38 pm (UTC)Someone who I have worked with for a couple of years was putting all our names and phone numbers down. I looked at my name and said 'It's dan - with an A" and she said "Oh you spell it with an A?!' Like that was weird or something!!

Date: 2008-02-26 05:45 pm (UTC)People never catch my name right when they hear it for the first time (I live in Belgium) so I always repeat and spell. And then they write it down and forget the pronounciation and call me Slow-Anne.
Why did my mother give me such a lousy name!!!!

Date: 2008-02-26 06:45 pm (UTC)Apparently not. I get Hana and Hanna more often then I get Hannah. Which is really sad to me. I tell people I spell it "The Palindrome way"
My middle name is Maree, it's a family name, I had an aunt Marie who started Maree's dress shop with that spelling because it would stand out more to customers, and it's sorta stuck. Not too many people are spelling my middle name, but when I write it down they like to point out that "I spelled my middle name wrong."

Date: 2008-02-27 12:02 am (UTC)In middle school, I hated my spelling so much that I started going by Staci for a while.
I still do not like the name in general.
What's really annoying is that people never remember it or hear it right. I've gotten CeCe, Tracy, and Stephanie a lot. I'm not sure if you have similar experiences, but this happens a lot.
My favorite spelling would be Stacey, since I like the even number of letters, and it doesn't look silly like Stacie.
One thing I hate about the name is the lack of "usable" nicknames. I mean, Stace is okay once in a while but you can't exactly be like, hi, I'm Stace! With Stacy, it's even hard to use 'Stace.' I get Stac a lot. It looks awful. And my friends called me Stacky for a while because that's a way you -could- pronounce my name if you were trying to be weird.

Date: 2008-02-27 04:15 am (UTC)I also get Tracy and Stephanie a lot, although my mom calls me CeCe as a nickname, since that's what I thought my name was when I was really little. My middle name is Jean, so I introduced myself as CeCe Dean.
I am pretty bitter about not having any nicknames.

I definitely feel the same way you do about needing the extra letter: I LOVE my name, but I really hate it when it's spelled without the H!

Date: 2008-02-27 12:26 am (UTC)I spelled my name out for someone recently, and he replied, "Guess your parents weren't very original, huh?"
No, and I'm glad they weren't. I'd rather not be named Kell-E or something equally as horrific.

Date: 2008-02-27 12:44 am (UTC)I'm really not fond of any other variations of Kathryn which I think stems from my lack of patience when I was younger and no one at all spelled my name right.
