Prefer Gloria to Glory (b/c of possible "Glory Hole" references)
I will always think of a boy riding on a huge hairy dragon/dog thing when I hear Atreyu. I don't think it was a name before the Never Ending Story, and I'm not much for movie names.
i dont know what Glory Hole is but ok... and Atreyu was indeed the hero in Neverending story...it was a book first (read it and re-reading it again) he didnt ride the hairy dragon Bastian did and that name is too close to "bastard" to me the name Atreyu in the book names "everyones Son" which i thought was nice
Dirty sexual reference. If I can think of it, I guarantee teenage boys can think of it.
I watched the movie before I read the book, and in the movie it's him who rides on that dragon thing, so that is the image I always have in my head. Bastian could be short for Sebastian, if you wanted to use it.
Atreyu will be a fine name for your son when he is 13-40... Before and after that, I don't know. Seems like it's going to be a hard name to learn how to spell and he'll have to spell it to people his whole life.
Ultimately it's your decision, but since you asked for an opinion, that's mine.
I do think Gloria is a very pretty name for a girl.
but its not only in a movie....its a book... plus what do you guys think about my name/ it is from a Book then movie??? do you think my name is stupid?
That's not something I would name my child, sorry.
I am not going to snark on it, because it's your name and you're already here. But if someone were to ask me about naming their daughter Arwen, I'd say skip it.[1]
I love the names in terms of for characters, in fact most of my RPG characters are named after literary figures. I have a pretty decent Half-elf named Eowyn that I play in Arcanum. ;)
well its quite obvious we arent going to agree on this... though i know that Tolkien was a linguist and studied languages and names... i still see no problem in naming your child after something fictional... and babynamer has been i site i have used for years and then Oprah's stupid oxygen channel took it over... its still the same website... its not like i am going to name my child...Frodo or Aragorn
They will always have trouble w/ Atreyu, especially w/ people who haven't heard it before. I have never seen that movie nor read the book nor heard the band, so when I heard it this past summer as a fellow counselor's camp name (we make up names for camp), it took me forever to get it right. And I'm a fairly intelligent 22 year old. I can't imagine trying to get little kids to remember it.
kinda like my name ARWEN...i have to explain that all the time.. but i dont care b/c its unique and I love that my parents were literate and read cool books and took the risk to think outside the box
Gloria sounds a bit old lady to me. But the nn Glory makes me think of Morning Glories, and I love it. (The glory hole reference is not something I'm family with, nor do I think it should be a deal-breaker.)
Atreyu is too weird (and I'm on the uncommon names are better side of the fence).

Date: 2005-12-20 12:08 pm (UTC)Killing Heidi is the name of a band.
Ugly Kid Joe, etc. Lots of band names have names.
I've never heard of the "quite popular" band Atreyu.
With that said, I don't like the name because I have no idea how to pronounce it.

It's not a BAD name. But it's a lot for a kid to live up to, I think. It's a lot for a kid to try to explain (and they will).
I like Artex better ;) I plan to name my next German shepherd dog Artex.

Atreyu - So hard to spell and he'll be explaining it to people for the rest of his life.
