So I work at the library so I get to be snoopy and see names a lot.

We're still stuck on a middle name for the first triplet, [Poll #1121342][Poll #1121342]

So...we're having trouble deciding on a name for our little girl. We've narrowed it down a little...my husband likes Harper a little better and I like Abigail (Abbie) a little better. However, today I thought we could name her Ruby, after my grandma (who died the week she was conceived). In any case the middle name will be Elizabeth, which is also a family name. My son's name is Jackson Elliot and we call him Jack. So a couple of questions:

Is this weird or morbid? I know it's fairly common to use family names, but my grandma *just* died in August. Is the name appropriate for a teenager or young woman? I can certainly see a little girl being called Ruby, and also an older woman. Does it fit well with Jack as a sibset?

With the recent birth of Harlow Winter Kate Madden i have begun to question taking your significant others name for the baby if not married.
I'm sure celebrities like Halle Berry and Jessica Alba will most likely do the same.

My fiance and i will not be married until after the baby for finanical reasons but the last name issue has just recently come to light.
Financially i find it being harder for me if i DO give his last name and then later change it when we're legally married but then i have family opinions & such to deal with. Tradition or whatever.
I actually think my fiance would be very upset with me if i didn't. I haven't exactly addressed the issue with him yet.

How 'customary' is it to give the fathers last name?
What exactly do you think are the pro & cons of this?
