Vesper

A recent post that mentioned "Vespertine" reminded me of a book series I read as a kid - it was about a fearless girl named Vesper Holly, who was a bit like Nancy Drew, only way more awesome :) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/tagging/glance/vesper%20holly)

I was probably about 12 when I read them, and I remember thinking her name was so strange, and whispering it to myself over and over, trying to decide if it was horrible or beautiful.

It's got something to it... I would not use it, but it does have a certain appeal.

Reactions?

(Vesper means evening in Latin, and is not listed on behinthename.com -shock!-, although there is a listing for Vespera, which is apparently Esperanto.)

How do you all prefer to spell names ending in -lyn or-line? Does it depend on the name? On the pronunciation? Like Caro-lyn vs. Caro-line. nyone think it weird when a name spelled -line is pronounced -lyn.

I ask because I prefer -line. -lyn rubs me wierd. Hell, I don't even like-lyn/-line names, but I have absolutely fallen in love with a name that I want to use for our next daughter. The way I saw it, the only way I've seen it is spelled -lyn. And yes, I'm going to be mean and not mention the name, sorry. I guess I would feel weird changing it. I'm weird like that. I have to buy the first thing I see.. I apologize to stuffed animals for not buying them..

I finally got my husband to agree on this name. He thgouht I was kidding at first (we heard it in a movie, it is the name of an author).

He doesn't like my other name, though. I don't think anyone would. I'm sure I'll get shit from you guys(heh, like I won't for my cryptic -lyn vs. -line question and my stuffed animals statement), but I love Eulalia, the Spanish pronunciation: Eh-ooh-la-lia. Maybe I'll get him to use it for a middle name. :)

Thanks.

*edit* sorry, didn't mean to disable comments; fixed!

So, I was thinking about the whole trend of giving girls names which are blatantly masculine (Ryan, James etc), and I realised there are two women at my work who have men's names. I've worked there a year and a half so the names don't even sound odd to me anymore, but I remember when I started I thought it was very strange. We have a Merlin (in her 30s I think), and a Felix (probably late 40s). What do you guys think? Do you know any people with odd names which you hardly even notice because you know them?

There was a girl in the [livejournal.com profile] cystic_fibrosis community who passed away yesterday. :( I didn't know her but her name was Aaryn and I thought that was a very pretty name and maybe those of you who are looking for A names might like to add it to your lists if you also like it.

Hello I am new here, well I have been watching the community for some time and I finally decided to post. Firstly, I am married and my husband's name is David Andrew and my name is Monica Eloisa (Elise). So you can say we have fairly common names. I used to want to name my chlidren crazy names or names of authors I liked but my husband wants a nice simple name. I am not pregnant yet but either way I prepare (who knows it might happen in the next 5 years and that isn't as long as it seems!) so I made a little lists of names that we have agreed on. They may change over time but for now we are set on these:

Emma Lucia (loo-cee- ah)
Emma Irene
Emma Catherine
Emma Christina

Leeloo Sophia
Leeloo Katarina
Leeloo Christina

Melinda Christina
Melinda Lucia
just Melinda (no middle name)
Melinda Hellena

that's for girls, your input in greatly appreciated.

If we have a boy I have decided that we're naming him Benjamin Andrew Stoltz (Stoltz being the last name of course) but suggestions are welcomed! My father is called Edgar Omar and his father is called Carl Franklin. I don't like either of them for a baby but maybe as a middle name or something.

Thanks!

So my Husband and I finally got married in October...
now we are debating when to start having kids, we thought we would try for a couple of months, then start trying again in June...

anyways...
I have a english/scot-irish/german (european mutt) background
and he has a german/italian back ground.
our last name is unfortunately very German/Dutch sounding...

he wants the name Scott for a boy which is okay... and he wants a totally Italian middle name-- Giovanni

I said okay just to "shut him up" but now he is set on it, and I am not so sure I like it.
for the girl we had picked Samantha Rose (both names have family bonds on both sides of our family)

But now that we are actually trying and what not, I am not sure I like any of the names we had talked about... and now he is set on these and doesnt wanna change them...

what do you guys think of the names??
