A new elephant has been born at my local zoo. She is an Asian elephant. Our zoo plans to do a naming contest similar to the one they did 13 years ago when a baby boy elephant was born in 1992. The name chosen was Raja, because it means "king" and because Aladdin was in theatres during the contest and the girl who submitted the name liked that. Her mother's name is Ellie. She lives with other elephants named Sri, Rani, Pearl, Donna and Clara. Rani is Ellie's other daughter and is due to give birth in February.

A picture of the new baby is here.

So far, people have begun suggesting names here but they range from thoughtful to awful.

I've thought up:

Kalli/Kala- a Hindi/Hindu name (Asian elephants are also known as Indian elephants, both Hindi and Hindu names fit in with that culture) that means black goddess. She was born just following 3 major blackouts in our city which many people seem to wat to recognize in the second link.

Aila- while it's Finnish, it means light-bearer and she is a light after the storm. Plus, her mom's name is Ellie which means light.

Tempest- named for the storms again

Athena- I just like this name in general. From the Greek Goddess of Wisdom.

Since this is a new baby and needs a name, what would you choose and why?

I babysat a boy today named Dante . He has an older brother, Lorenzo.

What do you think of the names?

Im not a huge fan but the names suit the kids. (Dante is almost a year and veryy adorable-duh. Lorenzo is 11)

Edit

I guess I should say why they have such names.

Lorenzo has his dads and grandpas middle name. Dante means Everlasting and they decided on that name because he took 10+ years to be conceived or something like that..

Snow

I got married on July 27th and my name is now Gazelle Snow. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it, or something, but I don't like the way it sounds. I always thought my fiance's last name was very nice, but I guess I never said my name with his over enough in my head to get the feel of it. My last name before I married was Holland.

I'm also pregnant, due in March, and a little down because most of my favorite names don't sound very good with my new last name.

I have really gotten into mythological names lately, and my favorite, Alecto would sound terrible with Snow.

When I look through baby name books and websites, I get frustrated because I like a lot of one-syllable names, and stuff that just sounds plain wrong with this new name. I sometimes just want to give the baby the last name Holland. ^.^ Boo.

I just loved Alecto. *sigh*

Can you think of any names that might sound good with Snow?

My (half) sister has 5 brothers and sisters (all half and all on her dads side, minus me). Her dad seems to like a certain kind of name. I dont know what kind, they just seem the same to me.. lol

My sister is Rosa ( shes named after my moms best friend, but the rest of the names are chosen by her father). Her siblings are Natasha (Tasha), Casandra (Cassie), Mallory, and Cecil (CJ). The mom to most of the kids (there are a few) is named Loretta. It is the 'same' kind of name to me as the rest so I thought Id add it in the post.lol

None of them are my style, but they are fine names- minus the fact they are the names of her spoiled, stuck up siblings.
