[identity profile] julieannie.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A new elephant has been born at my local zoo. She is an Asian elephant. Our zoo plans to do a naming contest similar to the one they did 13 years ago when a baby boy elephant was born in 1992. The name chosen was Raja, because it means "king" and because Aladdin was in theatres during the contest and the girl who submitted the name liked that. Her mother's name is Ellie. She lives with other elephants named Sri, Rani, Pearl, Donna and Clara. Rani is Ellie's other daughter and is due to give birth in February.

A picture of the new baby is here.

So far, people have begun suggesting names here but they range from thoughtful to awful.

I've thought up:

Kalli/Kala- a Hindi/Hindu name (Asian elephants are also known as Indian elephants, both Hindi and Hindu names fit in with that culture) that means black goddess. She was born just following 3 major blackouts in our city which many people seem to wat to recognize in the second link.

Aila- while it's Finnish, it means light-bearer and she is a light after the storm. Plus, her mom's name is Ellie which means light.

Tempest- named for the storms again

Athena- I just like this name in general. From the Greek Goddess of Wisdom.

Since this is a new baby and needs a name, what would you choose and why?

hubcap, britney, sparkle?!?! that's sick! you should definitely enter your names. they're far better than some of the 6 year olds who are submitting names.

aila is cute. and eila is actually a hindu name which means 'the earth'.
i really like asian/indian names. i would choose one of these:
jaya (victory)
ria (singer)
kalini (flower)
kiran (one of my best friend's names/she might not like me volunteering her name for a baby elephant tho, haha- it means ray of light)

I'd have to be with it for atleast a week to give it the perfect name.
Thats just how I roll.
Seriously though I come up with some badass animal names.
I can't name something though without being with it first.

Alright, my niece suggests Dumba, the girl version of Dumbo.
Also I just noticed I liked your suggestion of Kalli pronounced "Kah-lee".
