Ama

My mom works as a preschool teacher and one year she had this really adorable little girl named Ama (pronounced AH-ma). Anyway, the name is of Ghanaian origin, and its meaning is "born on Saturday." I've always sort of liked the name.

WDYT?

Also, since it's Ghanaian and I'm...not, do you think it'd be odd to name my child this?

ama means "water" in cherokee w/ that pronunciation. if it was "ah-MA" it would be "salt". and yes, "salt water" is "amà àma". that's what jumps to mind, being cherokee and all.

apart from that little tidbit, i think it's a nice name. as for the ghanaian part, there are a bunch of names that people use without actually being from the place of origin. my name is naomi and we're most definitely not hebrew or japanese.

I think it's nice. It might make a cute nickname. I can see the pronounciation getting tricky though.

i really like ama, and i don't see how people would/could mispronounce that name? it's pretty straightforward, i think!

and yeah, it's originally ghanaian (specifically akan) but they have the same naming system in neighbouring ivory coast & togo and apparently in some places in the caribbean? yay african diaspora, hehe.

I like it. It's simple and classic-sounding, but also unusual.

At the same time I have a pretty short name, and I sorta wish it were a nickname for a longer one instead. So if I were going to use Ama, I'd pick a longer name I liked and use Ama as a nickname.

I have a close friend who's name is Annamarie and everyone has called her Amma for the forever. It turns out it came from when he younger brother was little he couldn't say her name properly so that's what he called her. And it stuck.

So I think Ama/Amma makes a good nickname but maybe not a full name. It's cute though.

I sort of like it, but I think it would get mispronounced a lot.

AH-ma
ay-ma
ay-may
ah-may

Seriously, if vowels only made one sound, life would be easier.

I like it. I knew a guy named Amma. I think it sounds better on a girl, and I like the spelling Ama better too. Nice and simple.
