I wasn't sure if that is actually now it's spelled, I think my roommate spells it Jeane... but its her middle name so I don't encounter it often. :)

I would argue that any (usually) short, common name added just for its sound but without any significance or personal attachment is a filler name. There are some common ones, but a lot of those "filler names" are not filler in a lot of cases.

So my middle name is Grace, but it is not filler. My sister's middle name is Catherine and it's also not filler.
My mom's middle name is Mary and it was pretty much filler. A short, religious name that sounded good between her first and last names.

So that's the general rule of fillers, I would say.

my middle name is Leigh (after my grandfather)..
so, if there's a sentimental reason for it, i don't consider it "filler"..

normally, i would consider Anne a filler name, but since it's my grandmother's name, it wouldn't be filler if i chose to use it as a middle name for a daughter..

For me it is any common one syllable name like Jane, James, John, Rose, Ann. Of course there are some that have more than one syllable like Louise and Marie

i think a filler name is anything you just throw in that "sounds good", but doesn't mean much (or anything at all) to you... that could be ANY name.

Any commonly used mn that I'm sick of hearing. I don't care if it's mom and grandma's mn too, it's still boring and still the same mn of 899,000 other people. Unique names that honor > boring names that honor.

I plan on naming my first daughter Colleen Marie, the Marie being my mom's middle name. I can't just pull some unique name out of my ass when it's not my mom's name...

I think flow is totally overrated and secondary to using a name that has meaning.

And I completely disagree with you 100%. I think the other creative options could be MORE of an honor than the same mn. Blah, hardly anyone even uses their mn. And when it's a filler, it's not even that special.

very true... except, in the case of my son (who has my grandfathers first & last name as his two middle names), it would have been kind of hard.

my grandfather basically likes two things: E-bay & hunting. i didn't want Hunter as a mn, nor would i have used anything E-bay related hahaha. he has no favorite music/songs/etc... he does like Denzel Washington, & John Wayne. & i believe he once told me that Brad Pitt was handsome & a good actor hahhahah.

it would possibly work if i chose to honor my grandmother, she's a little more on the creative side. she would be thrilled at some of the things you suggested, but not my grandpop. lol

Girls: Ann, Elizabeth, Lynn, Leigh, Marie...at least, from my generation. Before that, I'd think Beth, Carol, Frances, Jane, Jean, Kay, Mary, Sue. Now, I think Grace and Rose..

On guys, Lee is the first that comes to mind. Then classics, like James, John, Joseph, Matthew, Michael, Robert, and William.

I mostly think these are filler middle names, although most of male names also work as filler first names.

My middle name is actually Marie, but I don't think any other name goes as well with my first name, so that doesn't bother me. Incidentally, I love many of the names I just listed, and would consider using some of them, so I don't consider them to be exclusively filler names.

Any name that has no meaning, and is just stuck in because it sounds good. Marie could be a filler name, or it could not be a filler name, if it actually has meaning to the person using it.

I don't really consider anything to be a filler name. Judging by the guidelines here of "just put in because it sounds good" my whole name is a filler name. lmao. And the whole name of any future children I had. A great deal of people pay no attention to meaning because they'd rather the name sound good.

Names that parents use for a middle name just because it flows with the first and last names and not because they like it; usually, they wouldn't even consider it for a first name at all, and are using it solely for the flow.

Examples:

Anne
Jane (even though I love Jane and would use it for a first name if I could find a middle name for it)

What about Dawn? Everyone in my high school, practically, had the middle name Dawn...either that or Elizabeth, so they are the two I think of first as fillers. But honestly, almost any one-syllable name (Anne, Beth, Dawn, Faith, Grace, Hope, Jane, Jean, Kate, Kay, Lee, Lynn, May, Rae, Rose, etc.), or two-syllable with the second one accented (Elise, Louise, Marie, Nicole, Noelle, Renee, etc.), is going to be seen as a filler name. I much prefer most of these as first names. I know an Elyse, and honestly I consider her name pretty unique, next to all the Laurens and Saras and Rachels and Jessicas I know....

Though, personally, I'd rethink my "filler" definition in the case of a more unique name (for example, to the person who posted about the name "Colleen," even though that fits the two-syllable/second one accented "rule"...I wouldn't personally consider that a filler name like Marie or Nicole). Other uncommon and therefore "non-filler" 1-2 syllable names that come to mind are...let's see, Adele, Danielle, Denise, Elaine, Gisele, Helene, Joanne, Lisette, Rochelle, Ruth, Tamar....

Personally, I prefer a completely different flow, though, just cause the rhythm "da-DA-da da-DA" --as in "Rebecca Marie" or "Brianna Nicole" or "Melissa Renee" (no offense to any with these names, of course!) or...well, you get the idea...is kinda old. I like stuff like...Sara Catherine, or Elizabeth Rachel, for example, that completely break what I've come to see as the "expected" flow.

And I have absolutely nothing to say about guys' names. :-) They're all either filler or weird, as far as I'm concerned, lol.
