in my last post people commented that it'd be horrible to name a kid Galen because it starts with GAY. nobody mentioned that Gabriel also starts with GAY. ;) is it because it's more common? why did we overlook this one?

Yeah I think it's b/c it's more common and when we pronounce it, it kinda flows together. As for Galen..it's a short name and easily can be teased w/"Gay". Although I didn't think about that until you mentioned it seeing as how I didn't read your previous post.

I have to agree with you!
I think the fact that Gabriel is more familiar to the majority makes us glide over something that we would notice (and criticize) about something less familiar.

In this case I can also say maybe Gabriel has more syllables to rely on, so that the Gay- sound is more balanced by other sounds, whereas Galen is a little shorter

i went to school with a boy name Galen.. nobody teased him.. i don't think there's anything wrong with the name.. (i don't like it and wouldn't use it myself.. only because the boy with that name in school looked like Dauber from the Coach television series in the 80s.. and Dauber always bugged me.. such an idiot)

now that i've seen it spelled Gaelen, i do like it better..

I know those people are just preventing the kid to get teased, but I hate it when people say stuff like 'It's horrible because it starts with 'gay'.' Right, because 'gay' is something awful...=\
Sorry, huge pet peeve. And a completely different discussion.

I still think Galen is a pretty name, but like I said last time, I like it spelled Gaelen better =)

wow people have complexes.. Galen is a perfectly fine name. My birth last name has an entire syllable of GAY and no one said a damn thing to me about it.. (Till I came out, then it was free reign and all in good fun).

Regardless, Galen is a perfectly fine name.

There's a Galen in my office, I've known him for 3 years, and I can honestly say I've never even thought about the "Gay" sound at the beginning of the name. Then again, I'm not a grade schooler.

My guess as to the overlooking of Gabriel is because it's usually shortened to "Gabe." The only way to shorten Galen is "Gay" or "Gail," neither of which are good.

I love the name Galen, and I don't think it matters. I don't say it GAY-len, I say it GALE-en, so I don't see the issue.
