funny convo with my father
Jun. 4th, 2007 11:04 pmwhen i revealed to my dad that we'd be naming our son ocean he had this to say:
"please. no. a boy named ocean in los angeles? he's going to be SUCH a c**ksucker."
my reply?
(laughing hysterically from shock) "i know, isnt it great?"
my dad makes me laugh and laugh. i know the name ocean will impart a sense of originality as well as mystique in a person. he'll be set apart (teased, im sure will be part of that...but who isnt) as well as objectified by the reference of his name...and my whole life i have been drawn to the sea, its in my blood and the name, to me, is a symbol of something that resonates in my heart...
but hearing my dad's reaction really got me giggling. leave it to pops to really put it out there.

Date: 2007-06-06 03:42 pm (UTC)My dad would probably be like that too, though not in those exact words. But then my parents think Lisa and Ethan are unusual names. So I'm not quite sure how they're going to take having grandsons named August & Lennon (or something equally offbeat), but it's not his choice to make. My brother & I live with their naming choices, so they'll have to live with ours [though my brother is way more conservative than me].
There are so many factors that influence a person that a name doesn't necessarily have a huge impact (my given name is really common and look how I turned out, lol); but if you're the kind of person to go against the herd mentality when it comes to naming, then that'll probably carry through with other aspects of raising your son and such.
It's wonderful that the name has so much meaning, I try to do that too. My middle name isn't something I'd necessarily like in the abtract; but it has a lot of meaning to my parents, and hearing the story helped me grow to love it.
Backing it up with a more 'mainstream' middle name does seem a good idea, so he'll have more options in later life.
So kudos to you :)

Date: 2007-06-06 04:04 pm (UTC)his middle name is actually going to be white. its a family name. so i dont think he'll have much choice as far as mainstream goes...but im confident we can figure something out. i thought of double middle naming him, but the hubs is slow to agree...

Ah I see, that's cool too.
