May. 25th, 2007 02:33 pmA good friend of mine had a baby a week ago, she named her Olivia Suzanne. I came out with 'Oh I love it, but you do know Olivia the most popular girl's name this year right?'
She says she didn't know, and she now feels like I've ruined the name for her a little bit..
:-( Wow I really should have kept that to myself.. i just couldn't help it. The name geek in me took over and it just flew out! But surely if you're putting a lot of thought into naming your child and you care about popularity.. the first thing you do is check it out on the charts?
Do you think She has the right to be mad with me?
Have you made any name bloopers before on account of you knowing & caring far too much about the subject?
A relative has given birth recently too.
She already has Ruby & Scarlett, now there's baby Poppy. All shades of Red.. WDYT?
If you had to use matchy names for a sibset, what would they be?
I'd go for something easy to get away with like Shakespearean names. Viola & Sebastian or something.

Date: 2007-05-25 02:19 pm (UTC)If I had to choose matching names, I'd go with Sarah & Hannah for girls and Noah, Jonah & Elijah for boys. All Hebrew names that rhyme somewhat less subtly than, say, Mark and Clark or something like that.
I also wouldn't mind going with "book characters" and naming my kids things like Scout and Atticus and Holden and Huck. But I'm just a geek like that. I'd probably never do it.

Date: 2007-05-25 04:09 pm (UTC)I really like Ruby, Scarlett and Poppy. It's not too obvious. I can't say Scarlett is my favorite, but I really like Ruby and Poppy.
As for your friend with Olivia, I think it's silly she feels like you ruined the name for her, but she'll get over it, I imagine! If she's anything like I was, she probably had a hard time naming her. It took me days to name my kids, and I still stressed over what I named them for about a month. LOL

Date: 2007-05-25 04:51 pm (UTC)it's probably just post-pregnancy mood swings :P
The name set I'd pick would be nature-oriented or music-oriented.
Stuff like river, water, fall, star, moon, sky, ray and song, note, lullaby, melody BUT all in foreign words.

Date: 2007-05-25 04:59 pm (UTC)She shouldn't be annoyed with you at all. You simply stated a fact, and it really shouldn't matter in the long run. And hey, at least Olivia's never going to have to worry about having a really weird name or anything, like some kids end up with.
As for sibling names...hmm... Probably Bibical. I once liked the idea of naming kids after music- like Aria, Cantare (to sing in Latin), Andante, Allegra (from Allegro), etc. But I don't think I'd actually do it. I'd want names that have a connection, but aren't that obvious.

Date: 2007-05-25 06:29 pm (UTC)Aria, Allegra, Cantare, Cadence, Lark, & Viola are my favourites.
Do you think Cantare would work for both sexes?

Date: 2007-05-25 06:15 pm (UTC)For girls, I'd go with a -lyn theme, like Jocelyn, Rosalyn, Evelyn and Marilyn. I think they're pretty.

Date: 2007-05-25 07:50 pm (UTC)As for themes.... hmm... Not really a fan of set naming, but I might do all the names beginning/ending with the same letter, flowers, or characters from a favorite book or movie (because that can be less obvious). Maybe even stick with a certain nationality of name

Date: 2007-05-25 08:32 pm (UTC)I think I'd go with flower names too. Flora, Poppy, Jasmine, Lavender, Lily, Pansy, Posy, Rose, Violet

Date: 2007-05-26 12:34 am (UTC)My friend's last name is Green. He would LOVE to name his kids:
Jade, Forest, and Emerald. HUH!?!
Maybe a trio of flowers- Rose, Lily, Violet....
Don't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong. :)

I'd probably go with scientific names: Melanotaenia, Palustris, etc. Either that or food. Rhubarb (Ruby/Rhuby), Rosemary, Coriander, Jagoda, etc.
Because I'm strange.

& I don't think you did anything wrong...and besides, Olivia is a pretty name, no matter how popular it gets! So don't worry about it too much =)
