[identity profile] anapology.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A good friend of mine had a baby a week ago, she named her Olivia Suzanne. I came out with 'Oh I love it, but you do know Olivia the most popular girl's name this year right?'

She says she didn't know, and she now feels like I've ruined the name for her a little bit..
:-( Wow I really should have kept that to myself.. i just couldn't help it. The name geek in me took over and it just flew out! But surely if you're putting a lot of thought into naming your child and you care about popularity.. the first thing you do is check it out on the charts?

Do you think She has the right to be mad with me?
Have you made any name bloopers before on account of you knowing & caring far too much about the subject?

A relative has given birth recently too.
She already has Ruby & Scarlett, now there's baby Poppy. All shades of Red.. WDYT?
If you had to use matchy names for a sibset, what would they be?

I'd go for something easy to get away with like Shakespearean names. Viola & Sebastian or something.

I don't think you did anything wrong. If she cared that much about popularity, she should have checked it out before naming the baby...

I don't think she should be mad at you. If she didn't want a popular name, she should have checked.

Beatles songs.
Prudence, Jude, Sadie, Julia, Desmond, Eleanor, etc.

If I had to use matching names, I'd like: Rosamund, Clementine, Heather (flowers); Simon, Matthew, Thomas (apostles); Laura, Rose, Caroline (from the Little House books); Josephine, Margaret, Amy (Little Women); Cordelia, Sebastian, Katharine, Perdita, Beatrice (Shakespeare). Matching boy names are harder to think of off the top of my head, but there are probably a few more I could come up with if I tried.

Ruby and Scarlett are okay, but WOW. hahaha. Poppy?

If I had to choose matching names, I'd go with Sarah & Hannah for girls and Noah, Jonah & Elijah for boys. All Hebrew names that rhyme somewhat less subtly than, say, Mark and Clark or something like that.

I also wouldn't mind going with "book characters" and naming my kids things like Scout and Atticus and Holden and Huck. But I'm just a geek like that. I'd probably never do it.

My sister wants to name her daughter Jean-Louise so she can call her Scout.

She'll find out a name is popular at some point anyway. Are these name charts country-specific? I like the names Scarlett, Poppy and Ruby, but not three shades of red. (Is she an Aries? :-)

I can't help it; I think the names Ruby, Scarlett and Poppy are adorable. If I had to use matchy names, I'd stick with a nature theme, since I already have a Lily Calla.

Btw, you did nothing wrong in pointing out the popularity of Olivia. Besides, Olivia Suzanne is a great name, so who cares. :)

poppy is pretty popular in the UK! like it's not considered that 'out there' or unusual.

a famous chef here, jamie oliver, has a daughter named 'poppy honey'. and his other kid is called 'daisy boo'. hehehe.

I'm a sucker for state names, like Virginia, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Maine, and Nevada. I'd never name a child any of those, except maybe Virginia or Georgia, though.

I have a Rose and an Iris. If there had been a third girl, she would have been Violet. We originally didn't plan on going with the flower theme, and really Iris does have a variety of meanings beyond the flower, but once we did, I felt compelled to continue it. I didn't name my boys flowery names, though.

I really like Ruby, Scarlett and Poppy. It's not too obvious. I can't say Scarlett is my favorite, but I really like Ruby and Poppy.

As for your friend with Olivia, I think it's silly she feels like you ruined the name for her, but she'll get over it, I imagine! If she's anything like I was, she probably had a hard time naming her. It took me days to name my kids, and I still stressed over what I named them for about a month. LOL

since she didn't bother to check in advance about popularity, there's no reason for her to care so much about it now.
it's probably just post-pregnancy mood swings :P

The name set I'd pick would be nature-oriented or music-oriented.
Stuff like river, water, fall, star, moon, sky, ray and song, note, lullaby, melody BUT all in foreign words.

My real name's Jennifer, and I was born in 1986, which means it was one of, if not the most popular name at the time. And except for Kindergarten, where there was another Jennifer and Middle School, where one of my best-friends was just Jenny- not Jennifer, I never had a problem with having too many around. Then again, I also spell my Jennie with the "ie" instead of the "y", which makes it a bit more unusual. But there's certainly nothing wrong with having a very common name.

She shouldn't be annoyed with you at all. You simply stated a fact, and it really shouldn't matter in the long run. And hey, at least Olivia's never going to have to worry about having a really weird name or anything, like some kids end up with.

As for sibling names...hmm... Probably Bibical. I once liked the idea of naming kids after music- like Aria, Cantare (to sing in Latin), Andante, Allegra (from Allegro), etc. But I don't think I'd actually do it. I'd want names that have a connection, but aren't that obvious.

I have a cousin of mine who has 3 girls and she named her daughters all with a capital A.

Adrianna
Alondra
Andrea

Another aunt named her kids after "jewels"
Esmeralda
Krystal
and Diocelina<--depending on how you view that.

I think Olivia is lovely and it wouldn't change my opinion of a name if it was popular. I always think that it's neat when I meet people with the same name as me.

For girls, I'd go with a -lyn theme, like Jocelyn, Rosalyn, Evelyn and Marilyn. I think they're pretty.

Honestly, If someone said that to me, I'd be annoyed, because I think it's just kinda a dumb thing to say. Either they didn't know, or they did and choose to do it regardless and once the kid already has their name I think the opinions should stop. That being said, it's something I'd get over really quick, so quick I probably wouldn't even bring it up with the person in the first place.

As for themes.... hmm... Not really a fan of set naming, but I might do all the names beginning/ending with the same letter, flowers, or characters from a favorite book or movie (because that can be less obvious). Maybe even stick with a certain nationality of name

I really like the names Ruby, Scarlett and Poppy, I know someone with a little girl named Poppy I didn't like it before I met the little girl.

I think I'd go with flower names too. Flora, Poppy, Jasmine, Lavender, Lily, Pansy, Posy, Rose, Violet

I agree that if popularity mattered, she would have checked on that before choosing the name (which I think is lovely!). That said, it was either be bummed about it now or be bummed about it on the first day of preschool, when 5 other Olivias join the class.

Cantare for both sexes-I think so. A lot of people would probably pronounce it "Con-tare" instead of Con-tara, which is definitely more feminine sounding with the "a"-sound at the end...

Poppy Montgomery, an Australian actress, is obviously named Poppy and all of her sisters and named after flowers, too. I kind of like the name.

I know a Karrie, Karley, and Korin trio of sisters and their last name starts with a K.

My friend's last name is Green. He would LOVE to name his kids:
Jade, Forest, and Emerald. HUH!?!

Maybe a trio of flowers- Rose, Lily, Violet....

Don't worry about it. You didn't do anything wrong. :)

OMG, are you serious, [livejournal.com profile] trtlstars?! My best friend is named Keryn (pronounced like Corrine) and her younger sisters are Karie and Karlie! (Their last name doesn't start with a K, though...)

What are the odds? :-)

I think it's probably more in how you said it than the fact itself. Like she might have interpreted it as a criticism even though it was just meant as a fact. It's a kind of sensitive topic. But there's nothing wrong with it being popular (obviously heaps of people like the name) and that shouldn't put her off!

She'll get over it. At least it's spelled correctly.

And matching siblings?

I'd probably go with scientific names: Melanotaenia, Palustris, etc. Either that or food. Rhubarb (Ruby/Rhuby), Rosemary, Coriander, Jagoda, etc.

Because I'm strange.

You know something...I have a daughter named Samantha. And (new) hubby and I plan on naming our future daughter Tabytha. So, I guess that makes it a "Bewitched" sibset. LOL

I've also got Cassandra and Christopher (not twins, just sibs).

Oh I love it when names match like that...I actually like the whole 'Poppy, Ruby, Scarlett' idea ;) =)
I don't know how I'm gonna match names though...I'd probably make them all have a link to nature (as in 'Lily, Skye, Luz' stuff like that =))
& I don't think you did anything wrong...and besides, Olivia is a pretty name, no matter how popular it gets! So don't worry about it too much =)
