City names

What do you think of city names for people?

A few I've heard are:

Brooklyn
Berlin
Seattle
Winona
Paris
Florence

I don't really like any of those, but I kind of like the idea, especially if there's some sort of meaning attached.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of naming babies after cities. But like you said, if it has a special meaning then maybe...but I'd use it as a middle name.

Well, the city was named after a legendary Dakota woman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Winona). But Winona Ryder was named after the city, not the maiden.

Ah yes, Winona, Minnesota, never been, but I live near it.

I like the name Brooklyn, but in the end it's really only up to you. Don't let anyone talk you into names, because you might regret it in the end.

[identity profile] zorianna.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I like Brooklyn.

I've always liked the name Siena, after the city in Italy. :)

I'm not a fan.

And you forgot Austin. ;-)

I like Florence and Winona because I think they're actually names, and not just cities...Austin and probably others too that I can't think of...

[identity profile] bloomingtulip.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I like Savannah, Houston, and Austin as names. I think there's one more, but I can't remember what it is.

I love the name Ada and fell in love with the name before I learned that it was a city in Minnesota. There are A LOT of names that are cities that most people don't know of. Morris is another (where I currently live). There are several city names I like because they are not well known cities.

I like the names Austin, Florence, and Winona.

I half like Brooklyn...

My grandma's name was Florence... so if we ever used that name it would be to name a kid after her. Otherwise I'm not a huge fan of the name.

The only city name that I can think of right now that I like is
Sydney :)

Seeing as most cities were named after people, I don't have a problem with it. Some of them just sound dumb, but some can be lovely.

From your list, I like Berlin and Florence.

Meant to say, growing up we named a lot of our pets after where we lived when we got them, or something associated with where we found them. My daughter's middle name was Sherman, after my female cat, who was named after Sherman, TX which was named for General Sherman.

We also had a Columbus (OH) and a C.C.(Copy Cat, after the generic Kinko's where we got her). Our siamese's middle name is Asmodeus, after a Judaic demon-- we found him outside of a synagogue.

brooklyn is one of my favorite girl names. i like that it can be shortened to brooke. don't really like any of the others. i choose names based on what i like, not whether it's a city or car or god or whatever :)

[identity profile] poetryandtruths.livejournal.com 2007-03-30 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I like Brooklyn because it can be shortened to Brooke too. I love nicknames!

[identity profile] abandoneddream.livejournal.com 2007-03-28 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I would only like it if it was given for some significant reason (like conception or such) and if it was out of the ordinary.

I know a Brookelyn (g), London (g), & have also heard of a little boy named Boston.

Baby names are always intriguing- aren't they?!

I kindof want to name a bunch of kids after places near here, or that I've been to. Cross O'Th'Hands! Little Snoring! Sheepy Magna!

I'm not a fan. Your child is not a map.

I like Orlando, but... it was from Shakespeare LONG before Florida :)

i love the names Sienna and Millau.

Sienaa is such a EBAUTIFUL GORGEOUS city. When i was there i just fell in love. The cathedral is so brilliant, the square, the entire city is love. I never considered it to be a name until Sienna Miller got *famous*. And now i've fallen in love by the thought to name my child after this wonderful place.

Millau : I was in France this year and there were all this *signs along the road (i dont know the proper english word but whatev)* with the city of Millau on it. I've always liked the name Milo and I thought Millau is pronounced a little bit cuter. Anyway, i'm going to the city of Millau maybe this summer, just because i like the name of the place. So then i also have a geniune reason to name my child Millau

[identity profile] xcuore.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Siena is such a BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS city

I like some city names (particularly Brooklyn, and Florence). I wouldn't name my child after a city because that does seem silly (I can't imagine my child saying, "My name is Berkeley, because that is city where my mom went to school."), but I wouldn't discount a name simply because it also a name of a city. Cities are named the same way many people name their children; the name is just supposed to sound pleasing, in general.
