I keep seeing lots of uncommon and/or made up names lately. I really don't care for this trend and hope to name my kids something pretty normal that everyone has heard of before. My husband especially doesn't like uncommon and/or made up name as his parents made up his sister's name (and everyone always butchers it) and his mom has a rather unique name she never liked much.

Is anyone else kind of fed up with the "Let's give our child an unique/made up name!" trend? If so, what names do you like?

I am definetly tired of it. Those poor kids are going to have to constantly spell their names out and correct the pronunciation all throughout their lives. My kids are Emilie Claire and Hannah Paige. My husband and I are Brandon Scott and Katherine(Kate) Jill. Normal names all around at our house! ;)

Yeah, I'm really sick of it. I'm not a huge fan of my name (Mary Linda) and wish my parents were a little more creative, but luckily I don't have a name with a bunch of y's or apostrophes in it.

My favorite names are:
Girls: Emily, Angelina (after my grandma), Kira, Catherine, Evelyn(which unfortunately my FH hates), Nora, Erica

Boys: Derek, Evan, Devin, Ryan, Paul, Adrian (kinda mad that it's more seen as a girl's name)

I'm like uncommon names, but NOT made-up names. I like a mixture of more common and uncommon. For girls I really like Astrid, Anastasia, Marissa, Ellia, Amalia, Lauren and Lucia... nothing too out there. My favorite boys name is Julian.

I hate the made up names too, but I do like the less common names. Sort of old school names that I personally haven't heard on anyone my age.. Unfortunatly they're now too popular on the under 5's :-(

My favourites are:

Anabelle
Amelia
Aurelia
Elyse
Esme
Evie
Felicity
Iola
Juliet
Mariella/Marielle
Ophelia

I believe there is a happy medium between common, boring names and crazy made-up names.

Personally, I have a common boring name and hate it. I guess the grass is always greener...

Yeah, people are always assuming they can call me Jenny.

If you don't know someone well enough to know what nn they hate, you don't know them well enough to be calling them by a nn at all.

I agree with one of the above posters about a happy medium between common and unique... I like names that you don't hear all that often but at the same time are actual names - not a mix of random letters and sounds.

For example, my name's "Trista" - it's uncommon to the point that I've only run into one or two in my entire life, but still not so different that people have trouble pronouncing it, you know? Although I do have a friend who just asked me the other day what my name was short for... hmmm... honestly, what could "Trista" be short for?? I enjoy having a name that can stand on it's own without having to be refered to by my last intial tacked onto the end (I always felt bad for the clan of Jessica's and Matthew's growing up!)

I agree with you. Right now my favourite girls name is Regina Kate and for a boy I think I like Nigel William best.

I'll admit to having a difficult time accepting made up names. It's not that I want my kids to have names that are common, but something those trendy-unique names are just RIDICULOUS. I can't figure out a way to be nice about them. "Yeah, La'Qui'Shay is a GREAT name. Super."

I tend to like very classic names. Kate, Audrey, Amelia, Annabeth and Eleanor for girls; Walter, Jonas, Elias, Charles and Ethan for boys. I hate that some of those have become so common, though.

I too am in the "I like uncommon, but not made-up" camp. My child, whether boy or girl, is going to be named Devin. Devin Rose as a girl, Devon Alexander as a boy.

I can't STAND any of the top 10 names, never have. But I like some more popular names, like Bailey, and more unique ones like Gwendolyn.

I can't stand it when parents make up their kids' names either. And when they tell me about it, they're all proud. Like, they think they're.. clever.. or something. And I'm just like.. um, no?

My favorite combos are Annabelle Scarlett, Gemma Faye, Rosalind Isolde, John William, and James Caspian. I am also in the "creative but not made up" camp. Except John William, but that's because it's the only name where I'd be naming my son after people. And my family has pretty simple names.

I like creative, but not made up as well.

Our boy names are pretty tame:
David Christopher
Jonah Edward
Patrick Anthony/Anthony Patrick
Uilliam

Our daughter was Brenna Rose and some other girl names we like are various combinations of:
Eliza
Grace
Lily
Esme
Edith
Elizabeth
Catherine
Catrine
Prism (eek, I know)

A few of my names, like Catrine and Uilliam, are Irish and uncommon around these parts, but are actual names according to my baby book :). Uilliam would go by Liam for short. Our one name that is not a name I've ever heard of, but is a word, is Prism. I know it's weird, but I just love it. It's not #1 on the list, though. I figure if someone can use names like Crystal and Ruby I can use Prism. That, and I really want a 'stone' name and Prism makes me think of rock. I also have my 'secret' girl name that I can't find anywhere, but which is the name of an author and a name of a character in a movie, so at least it has a precedent..lol.
