Here are relatively uncommon names (in my opinion) I've seen around:

Dariana
Ellery
Ilyse (common name, uncommon spelling - I don't like it.)
Amarylis
Jael (from America's Next Top Model - I love this name but not the spelling, although I can't think of a spelling I like better.)
Celestina (from Dance Life on MTV)
Rosetta

Thoughts?

I've heard of the name Jael for awhile, and it's one of my favorites personally. It's short and very pretty.

My friend's name is Amarylis, but goes by Mary. I've always thought the name was very pretty.

I've yet to see the new ANTM. How is Jael pronounced?

That's kinda pretty! It's nicer than the way I would have pronouced it. I would have called her Jail.

If I looked at Jael, I'd pronounce it "Jail."

Rosetta in my mind = Rosetta Stone

I agree totally with both things you just said.

Ellery reminds me of scriptwriting.
I personally prefer Celeste.
Rosetta reminds me of the Rosetta Stone.

i know a Jael. she's four. no varient spellings, as its a name from the Bible that is not often used. :) her and her sibs are all Bible names. Abigail, Jael, and Malachi.

I think Jael is the woman in the bible who lured an evil king into her tent, fed him, waited for him to fall asleep, and then put a tent spike through his head. I think that's her.

yes Jael is the English version of Yael (and is pronounced Yah-elle). Many names that have Ys in Hebrew have Js in English ie Yaakov/Jacob Yosef/Joseph Eliyahu/Elijah etc

I actually like Yael a lot better than Jael

I see that I was a little unclear. I meant that Yael is pronounced Yah-elle, not that Jael is

I agree, I like Yael much better.

to me Jay-elle just sounds like initials, not a name.

i'm not sure if they're related. i'm having a bible brain east and can't remember exactly where she is in the bible. :( but i'm guessing maybe not so connected. :/

I've run into a few other interesting, uncommon names.

I have a friend named Dava which I think is a pretty but unusual feminine form of David.
I also have a friend named Areli, though teachers always say "Ariel."

I teach a girl named Ellimae and a girl named Tayla.
I also have a Talia (tuh-LEE-uh) and an Alia (uh-LEE-uh, though the spelling there is probably wrong) in the same class.

Is Dava pronounced like Day-va (like David) or Daah-va?

The first one. I think it's pretty.

Dariana - meh
Ellery - it's okay but it reminds me of celery. I like Mallory a lot better.
Ilyse - yeah I don't like this spelling
Amarylis - reminds me of Amarillo
Jael - ew ew ew that girl looks like a total meth-head and her name sounds like "jail"
Celestina - yuck
Rosetta - eh
