Another of my colleagues had a baby this week - well, his wife did.

The name is:

Harry Joseph

What do you think? I always associate Harry with cocky posh boys. Also, the surname begins with R so I think when you say Harry (surname) there are too many R sounds... Apart from that I think its nice enough, if not really my style.

My grandfather's name is Harry. I always associate with oldies. It's quite nice though when people aren't trying to pronounce it as hairy.

For a linguistics student, I'm actually crap at phonetics, but I say it more like happy (with Rs obviously, but the 'ha' part sounds the same as happy as opposed to hairy).

I think it's an American / British thing. I'm British and over here Harry is pronounced with a short 'a' like in cat, candle etc. Hairy would have a longer sound, like in air, bear etc. Best way I can describe it really.

I would have liked Henry Joseph better.

Harry is usually a diminutive of Henry, so they could well have given him the latter as his official name and simply called him Harry. It's perhaps a bit more sensible, although I guess Harry is as easy (or difficult) to take through one's whole life at Henry is.

Yes, I think Prince Harry is actually a Henry. None of the Harrys I've actually known have been Henrys though - it's always been their given name

Henry Joseph is my grandfather's name. I agree, I like Henry better than Harry.

You think? I see Harry working on boys up until their twenties and then on much older men (60 plus) but it sounds a bit off on anyone in between I think...

Eh, why not Henry Joseph R___ ? Use Harry as a nickname.

That's kind of what I thought at first but I dunno...I don't generally like the use of shortened names as given names, but I can see how one could like Harry and not Henry. I also think it's probably distinct enough to be used as a name in its own right. None of the Harrys I've known (I can think of 3) have actually been Henrys.

Yeah, I can understand that. Too many same-syllable sounds just bug me for some reason, but that's just my opinion.

I couldn't name a baby an adjective like that.

Even if it isn't spelled hairy, it's still hairy. And hairy is generally not a nice adjective when referring to people. It's almost like naming your kid fatty or asshaty.

We're in England though, so Harry and hairy are not pronounced the same (see above).
