I think I may be about to start a name craze. Because it's hard for me to believe everybody hates this name as much as they seem to. Personally I think people would adjust to the suggestion, just like my fiance did.

Drum roll..............Matrix.

I think it's rather unique and new age. Plus it sounds nice. I've heard names a lot stranger than Matrix!

What does everyone else think?

i dont think i could ever hear Matrix and not think of the movie, but if that doesn't bother you, than that's all that matters : )

Not really, they are naming a baby and that baby turns into a person who has their own feelings. So just because it doesn't bother me, it doesn't mean I should name a child Edward Scissorhands. I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to point out something that people often overlook. I don't understand your way of thinking, that's all.

Yes, unfortunately no one has that right. I definitely believe there should be naming laws, but sadly I'll never see that happen. I don't know about you, but I definitely think that if I wanted to name my child Vagina that someone should be able to stop me...and be able to stop anyone else who wanted to choose anything awful. Because there aren't naming laws, there are children running around with names like Abcde, Urhines Icy Eight Special K, Chlamydia, Erotic, etc.

I'm overreacting because I have a certain belief that I had before I even talked to you? The names I listed have really been used on children. Also, if a list were compiled I'm certain it would be made my several people, not one person.

It's a girl in 30 Rock.

I think of math and the movies neither of which am I overly fond of. BUT I wouldn't completely freak out if I heard someone introduce themselves that way.

I'm not a fan, but I do like that Max can be used as a nickname.

I think it's very trendy and will just make people think you named your kid after a movie for a long time.

I'll name my kid Armageddon.

I'd rather name him Neo or Morpheus.

I know a 3 year old named Neo and a 2 year old named Trinity. I am trying to get a playdate set up for them.

I don't care for it myself. I think Maddex would be a good alternative. It has the same type of ring to it, but sounds like name and not a thing.

I have a friend who actually named her little boy Pi (middle name). They told their friends and the collective response was "...what the hell were you thinking?!?"

Heh, sorry, I think it's terrible. I mean, really terrible. But if you like it, we're not gonna be able to change your mind. Just keep in mind just because you love it, doesn't mean people's reaction of dislike aren't believable. Sure, everyone will adjust to the kids name, they have no choice, but it doesn't make it a GOOD name to them. Good luck.

Matrix comes from mater (mother)

Date: 2007-03-05 02:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] neroli.livejournal.com
The word matrix comes from the Latin word for MOTHER, and is (or was, depending on what dictionary you consult) used to mean "womb," so it doesn't make a lot of sense on a male.

Dictionary's origin: [Origin: 1325–75; ME matris, matrix < L mātrix female animal kept for breeding (LL: register, orig. of such beasts), parent stem (of plants), deriv. of māter mother] (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/matrix)

womb is what I thought of too because I heard Matrix used as such a lot when I took Medieval Women Writers in University..

Don't put it off the table, just because of what others think of it here.
Everyone has their own opinions - I say keep it in your list, who knows, it may catch on!

Well, I never thought of it as a name, but I think if you pair it either as a first or middle with something not unique or new age, it just might work! just be really careful what you pair it with. please don't turn it into one of those rediculous celebrity baby names. I think it has a shot at cuteness if it's not throttled.

So you mean like... for example Anthony Matrix, rather than something like Harley Matrix ?
From: [identity profile] fleckerbug.livejournal.com
Ew ew ew ew ew barf ew.

Other than it being the name of a futuristic movie, I don't see how it is unique or new age at all. I guess it depends on what your definition of 'New Age' is.. some people think futuristic, others think of names like 'Princess Moonbeam Zygote'.. either way, I don't think 'Matrix' fits the bill. As for unique.. well, I could name my child 'Staple' or 'Qumquat' and it would be unique in that it's not a name.

I'm sorry, personally, I think it's absolutely horrible. I would never name a kid that.

Also, it reminds me of math and that's never a pleasant association for me.

I didn't read all of the comments... what do you think of Mattox? I'm not sure how it's normally spelled, but it's new with the same feel.

But I don't like Matrix, sounds like a thing and not a name

If you named a girl Matrix you could call her Trixie.

Maddox would be a good alternative :)
