SSA Name Game
Feb. 27th, 2007 03:47 pmI noticed that some people tend to be a little more adventurous with the girls' names they like and then less adventurous or more traditional with boys' names when they're picking baby names out.
List your top 10-15 names for both boys and girls and list find how they all ranked in the Social Security Administration's baby name ranking database. Then compare how your boys' and girls' names ranked.
Here are mine, based on the popularity of names in 2005:
Girls:

I only have two names that are not in the top 1,000 for my boys' but more than half of my girls' names haven't been in the top 1,000 in the last 15 years. Strange how that happens. I wonder why that is? Anyone have theories?
And if anyone else wants to do this, go on ahead. =)

I have given a lot more thought to girls names since we are having a girl. So, honestly I don't have any favorite Boys names. What I use to think was a unique boys name is now the super popular, Adian. I never heard of an Adian when I was growing up. So, I think boys names are more adventurous then they use to be. It's all relative. And I think there are only so many combinations for masculine sounding names. You can't add an a to the end of Jason to change it up.

Date: 2007-02-27 10:45 pm (UTC)Also, a lot more girls names are in use than boys'. If you look at the SSA list and get it to display the number of births, you'll see that for very popular names, for a given ranking boys will have around 4,000 more births than girls. At around #230 or so, girls start having more births for a given ranking than boys. This is just a by product of it being trendier to be weirder with girls' names and be more conservative with boys'. So a boys' name ranking 900 is less popular than a girls' name ranking 900, which means that all these rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt. It's all relative. That's why I really like the NameVoyager http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html , it graphs names based on number of births. So if you type in Mary you can see that it declined in popularity for awhile but remained ranking 1st for a long time anyway.

Date: 2007-02-28 09:23 am (UTC)Girls:
Brenna (My daughter's name, although her full first name is actually Brenna Rose)-- 330 in 2004, when I named her, 353 for the last year on record. Interestingly, to me anyway, her name made the top 1000 for the first time in 1971 and steadily increased until it peaked at 234 in 1995.
*Secret first name for next girl-- not in the top 1000 ever. Hell, I can't even find it in baby books.
Lily-- 39; 231 in 1880 with a decrease in popularity in between until the 1980s.
Eliza-- 310; 85 in 1980. Became decreasingly popular until the early 1960s when it fell off the list. Started regaining popularity fairly steadily in the early 1970s.
Edith-- 628; 28 in 1880. If we use this name, it will only be with the mn Catrine, to semi-mirror my name, Meredith Catherine.
*Mary-- 73, 1 in 1880. This name ranked 1 from 1880-1946, and varied between 1 and 2 until 1966. Steadily decreasing in popularity since. I really don't like this name, especially given my name, but it is one of my husband's favorites. We will probably not use it.
*Alice-- 414, 8 in 1880. More or less steadily decreasing since 1880. Another one of my husband's favorites. I really don't like it either but like it better than Mary. Not sure if we will ever use it. I feel kinda bad since I picked out first daughter's name, although my husband agreed with it. Our new super secret name has also grown on him, he said mostly because I like it so much (lol, yeah that made me feel bad). Basically, we just brain storm together and we'll glom on to names we like that the other comes up with.
Girl middle names:
Esme-- never in the top 1000. Will be the middle name for secret girl name. ;)
Grace-- 14; 19 in 1880. Decreasing in popularity from the mid-1880s to the 1970s, when it then started gaining in popularity again. Always fairly popular, never less popular that the 300s.
Catrine/Catrione-- never in the top 1000.
_____________________________________________________
Boys:
David-- 14; 18 in 1880. Despite the high ranking, it's actually decreasing in popularity with a peak of 1 in 1960!
Jonah-- 184; 714 in 1880. Started increasing in popularity in 1970, but has been increasing in leaps and bounds since the mid-1990s. Didn't even make the top 100- except a few times between 1900-1970. Before then was not that popular, but who knows since the list only goes to 1880.
Patrick-- 108; 67 in 1880. Decreasing in popularity. This one is neat in that I can see 2 distinct peaks between 1880 and 2004. A family name, would be the mn for Anthony, or vice versa.
Anthony-- 8; 103 in 1880. Increasing in popularity. A family name. I didn't used to like it because it was the name of a guy I hated in high school, but thought it would be nice paired with Patrick; both of the names are the names of 2 of my maternal uncles-- Patrick is deceased and Anthony I am very close to.
Middle names:
Edward: 134; 11 in 1880. Decreasing in popularity since the late 1800s. This is my husband's middle name. I used to hate it, but it's grown on me as a middle name. I still don't like his first name-- Albert; he goes by 'Ted'. He is the III and we want to end that unfortunate pattern. It would be the mn for Jonah.
Christopher-- 9, 139 in 1880. currently decreasingly in popularity after being very popular during the 1970s and 80s. A family name, but more just because we like it. Being a family name, and the name of two of my ex boyfriends and one of our friends were actually strikes against it.

Date: 2007-02-28 09:24 am (UTC)Regarding popularity, I don't know why we like more popular boys' names. My husband and I just really like a lot of biblical names, which have been gaining in popularity as of late. I'm also the one coming up with the more unusual girls' names and my husband's girls' names aren't that unusual. A few of my girl's names are very common, like Rose and Lily, but I like those more for the meaning than the sound.. or both, really. I also really just don't care if a name is common or not. With Brenna Rose, my favorite flowers are roses, my favorite color is red and I like fire. Brenna means flame (according to one source-- the first source I used, all others it's raven). Also, I simply have more interest in girls names and, as someone else said, there are just more of them. It's funny, I want boys just as much as I want girls, but I think more of girls names and most stuff I look at or occasionally buy for future hypothetical baby is girls' stuff.
Also, as someone else said, male names tend to be passed down more. There are just so many more 'common' boys' names.
