Hello!

My partner and I were discussing boys' names (we don't know the sex yet) and he really likes the name 'Spike'. I think it's cute, but as a nickname. I don't know if it would be fair to give a boy a nickname as a first name? I suggested it as a second/middle name but he said he hates the idea of calling a kid by his middle name.

So, are there names that could be shortened to 'Spike'? Or names that have a similar sound or feel or do you all think Spike is fine as a first name?

Thanks!

Judge Spike Lastname -- nah.

CEO Spike Lastname -- nah again.

Convicted felon Spike Lastname -- now it sounds right.

I don't think you even want to start down the road of using Spike as a nickname, given how hard those are to shake. (Think about how many adults are still called Buddy or Little Jim or whatever.) Maybe your boyfriend could get a dog and name that Spike? Because I have to say, it's a very bad choice for a human being.

It reminds me of the vampire in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
He did turn out nice, however, not someone you'd want to base a child's name on.

wow... you'd actually name your child spike just cause your boyfriend likes it? i'd get him a pet goldfish or something and let him name that spike. naming a child spike, even as a middle name, is just wrong.

yeah i know what you mean... but geez... if my boyfriend said he wants to name our kid "thunderbolt" or something as equally silly as spike... i don't think i'd even consider it. i'm sure you two can come up with something more normal that you both like... i hope so, anyway!

Ugh, don't name your kid Spike. Try picturing a laywer or a CEO or a doctor named "Spike." It just doesn't even work. Now picture a punk rocker or a biker named Spike. THAT works. That's just the connotation that everyone will think of when they hear the name and despite what people may think, it could end up hurting his chances at getting a job like that when he's older. I know it sounds stupid (and it is) but people will assume things about him based on his name and I really doubt you want that.

What is wrong with being a biker?

Nothing, but if he wants to be a District Attorney or something, he's not going to want a name that makes him sound like one.

She's just saying that it immediately fits him into a specific genre. It will be harder for him to be taken seriously as a doctor than a biker, not that there's anything wrong with being a biker.

Spike is NOT a person's name! It's a dog's name! Please PLEASE don't name your child that! It's not even good as a nickname.

Maybe you could get a dog and name it Spike so he AT LEAST gets to call something Spike?

Oh I know it's nickname, but I am saying it's a not a good nickname.

Hm. I'll start out saying I don't really like the name Spike for a kid, but I knew a cat named Spike once and I thought that was great....
However, I have a son with an odd name. When I first mentioned liking the name online you'd think I'd personally insulted everyone on the planet. I went ahead and named him that anyway. I don't regret it, but the name had a lot of very special and personal meaning to both my husband and me. We also gave him a more "normal" middle name, if he wanted to change it later.
We have three sons, who through no plan or naming of our own, have ended up with the nicknames Jet, Scooter, and Rambo. So nicknames happen and can be much more "fun" than a safe name. Good luck with your son and his name!

Oh, I'm sure they mean well. Part of the joy of posting on the internet! Good parents always consider the other parent before they say no. LOL

I always wanted a nickname. I never got one. *sob* However most people seem to know me by my user name now....is that sad or what?

I had a great aunt named Spike... I think her real name was Lorraine or something like that... No one called her anything but Spike..

That aside, I don't really care for it. The "pet name"-iness has kind of been dulled for me because of the family relation, but it's still not a very good name to force on a kid...

My husband wanted to name our last kid Totem. Needless to say it wasn't even up for discussion.

Yeah, take your husbands wishes into consideration, but you gotta allow each other at least a couple of outright vetoes.

I wouldn't name my son Spike, but some characters on All My Children did. There is a baby there named Spike, so there will probably be some more kids with that name in the near future since naming trends seem to follow soap operas and sitcoms. Spike as a nickname is cute though.

my friend had twins 12 years ago. we all prayed she was having girls because of the names they had chosen. unfortunetly they had twin boys:

foxx- after some tv show character
wolff- because he had to have an equally strong name as his brother

their last name is martin. they have no middle names to fall back on even. recently she had to quit work to homeschool because the kids got teased so horribly for their names and they refused to go back to school. parents should take into consideration that children with names that are not "names" will spend the rest of their lives saying yes this is my given name. no it's not a nickname. i think that they are horrible as nicknames as well, but at least a nn would have been better than a given name. some names just aren't names. when she first told us their choice of names we teasingly named the babies table and chair. equally as stupid, but we were hoping she would get the picture. sadly they didn't and now the kids are suffering.

Maybe Fox after Fox Mulder from The X-Files (and personally, I LOVE that name)? Anyway, in my opinion, that story sounds really bizarre. Kids teasing other kids so badly about their names that they refused to go to school? Where on earth does she live that this could happen? I went to school with people who had FAR "weirder" names than that (though, admittedly, the spelling of Foxx and Wolff is pretty bad), and they never got teased.

Buninmyoven, there's nothing wrong with the name Spike that I can see. Spike Milligan, for one, hasn't seemed to have suffered from that name. People here are overreacting (but then, they do that). Of course, to me, it brings up images of Spike from Buffy, so I could be biased because I love that show. Honestly, though, I would MUCH rather name my kid Spike than something like Skyler or Kayden, so... there you go.

I would rather name my kid something like John, which is very boring, than anything "trendy" and "ewnike".

Well, if you don't have friends/family members who are fans of Buffy, then it's hardly likely to be an "issue". For me, if I named my kid that, they'd all automatically assume I named him after Spike. It depends on your crowd, you know? But if you're worried about that association - and there are A LOT of people who are devoted to Buffy - then it should make you happy to know that Spike was arguably the most popular character of the entire series. Sure, he was a vampire, but he was a "good man" who redeemed himself and, you know, saved the world. I used to be in love with him when I was 15/16 (he's very good looking, ha). Let's just say, there are far worse people to share a name with.

The kis were going to a very preppy type of school and the other kids mostly had trendy type names so their names really stuck out as being too different so unfortunetly tons of teasing followed them wherever they went.

From: [identity profile] xanya.livejournal.com
That is really strange (and unfortunate). The kids that teased them must have been greeeeat human beings.

I would NOT use Spike as the actual first name. A nickname is one thing, but don't saddle the kid with something like that. It'll probably get you pegged as a Buffy fan even if you're not (not that that's a bad thing, but...)

I just keep thinking of Spike and Buffy in Something Blue, where they say something like:
"Do you want the invitations to say "Spike" or 'William the Bloody', because either way it's going to look majorly weird."
"Whereas the name Buffy lends it that touch of classic elegance."
