Madison vs. Addison

It seems like Madison is a name that a LOT of people can agree they don't like... but then it also seems like half of the people who don't like Madison will say they like Addison. WTF? To me they are both really tacky... how can you like one but not the other? They're practically the same! I think Addison sounds even more boyish than Madison but I truly don't like either.

Madison is too popular so Addison is just another alternative, even though it's gaining popularity. I love the name Addison, simply because my favorite characters in two tv shows are named Addison.

David Addison in Moonlighting. Played by none other than Bruce Willis :-D

I like the name Madison, as a name, but I hate the level of popularity it's at.

Addison, on the other hand, I just dislike. I HATEHATEHATEHATEWITHABURNINGPASSIONHATE Addison on a girl, but I think it looks nice on a male, but the only Addison I know is a raging asshole, so I could never personally use the name.

Plus once a boys name goes over to the dark girl's side, theres usually no getting it back any time soon.

Well, they're two different names, so they can be liked or disliked individually.

I would like them both if it weren't for their current state of popularity and this blandness.

I know a Madysen.

I've always thought of Madison as a boys name... growing up there was a boy at my school a few years younger than me with that name (small school) - I almost feel bad for him now that he must be 18 or so and there's a whole race of little girls with the same name as him!

Either way, I hate both :)

They are both terrible, I think Addison's a bit worse because it's also the name of a disease.

I'm guessing that people like Addison more because they find it fresher, even though it's just as awful as Madison. And I'm sure the Grey's Anatomy character helps, I've never seen more than five minutes of the show but I've seen people say they like it because they love GA.

Madison is tacky as hell. I always thought Addison was a boys' name... It's not really my style but it's better than Madison I think.

I like Madison more than Addison. Madison just sounds girly to me, always has. Though I'm one of the people who first heard it on Splash, so I *still* associate it with a pretty mermaid.

I knew an Addison in high school, a male, and I never liked his name. This was before the whole Madison thing (or at the beginning of the trend anyway, definitely before I knew lots of people were naming real children that) so even without the prior bias of Madison, Addison sounded girly to me. It just seemed a bit fancy and fussy for a boy's name. But at the same time, it sounds too masculine on a girl. I just don't like the name on anyone. I don't know why the one letter different letter to Madison makes it seem better to me, but it does. It's still way too common for me to remotely like it myself, but I can at least understand why it appeals to other people. It's popularity doesn't surprise me.

I agree that Madison sounds much more feminine. I hate them both, but I think I hate Addison more. It sounds so boyish and I hate how everybody likes it "because of one of my favorite shows". Yeah, just like the other zillion people who like it because they heard it on Grey's Anatomy.
