Alyson

On my way to work I saw one of those decals for kids' sports teams with the child and their number on the car in from of me. The name was Alyson. I had to kind of look at it for several minutes to figure out how to say the name.

It's Allison or Alyssa. Not both.

It's not the worst name in the world. But it still bothered me.

i don't see what's so horrible about alyson. i don't like any form of "allison" personally, but at least it's pronouncable.

I've seen Alysen too. I think I actually like the sen more than the son just because the son makes me think of a last name. None of the spellings for this one bother me for some reason... I'm not too keen on the name in general though.

There was an Alisan that used to be on a tv show, if I'm thinking correctly. I hate that spelling. It doesn't read as Alison to me.

Hmm, I've never seen that spelling, but yeah, that doesn't read Alison to me either.

Then there was Aliceyn from a previous season of American Idol. I don't like that at all.

[identity profile] after-the-ashes.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow.... I like Alice. But why the y? That's just bad...

[identity profile] decembermalice.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like the name, but I prefer Alison or Alyson to Allison.

[identity profile] bopeepsheep.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Allison is a surname over here in the UK; Alison is the first name. So Alyson would be unsurprising to me, albeit a bit annoying because of the unnecessary y-for-i thing.

Double-l in names is a big transatlantic divide. Hillary - US; Hilary - UK (and we still have a reasonably prominent politician named Hilary who is male; it's traditionally a man's name, and etymologically so is Alison).

That's nothing compared to Nevaeh and Maddysynne and Mikinzii.

I don't think some people understand this community very well....
It's not about names YOU don't like...it's about retarded names and the people who use them.

[identity profile] bopeepsheep.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
This community is for anything related to names of all kinds. Whether you are expecting, planning on children, or just like names, this is a wonderful place to get ideas and opinions. You don't have to be a parent to join, this is an open community for anyone interested in names of any sort.
Be respectful when asking for or giving opinions. If you don't care for a name, express it in a polite manner. This works both ways, when you post, that is an open invitation for opinions. If you can't handle both positive and negative feedback, please refrain from posting.
Nothing about mental capacity in there.

[livejournal.com profile] baby_name_snark may be the one you're thinking of "for retarded names and the people who use them".

[identity profile] miss-madelyn.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I got that mixed up.
Oh well...

[identity profile] miss-madelyn.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe she could use the link to that community...Because I'm here for the baby names, not for the ones people don't like :)

I wasn't aware people had to like everything in the community. It's about names, give her a break. Scroll past, it's not so hard.

[identity profile] miss-madelyn.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it's not about snarking about names...I didn't realize that you were allowed to do that here.

[identity profile] omgzits--tam.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's okay.
I'm not really fond of the name, but I think it looks alright.

I dont see whats wrong with Alyson.........of all the weird spellings in the world, this is lowest on my list of annoyances.
I like the name Alyson and actually it is one of our top names for a girl.

And what about Alissa? I've seen that before too.....

[identity profile] sleepherealone.livejournal.com 2007-01-26 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you on that one. My dad's girlfriend's kids' half-sister is Allyson, and I've always WTFed at the double Ls. To me, it doesn't transition well into an adult name, while Alison/Allison would.

[identity profile] krosp.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh the worst I saw like this was Alyse. It took me ages to figure out that it was Elise, because it really could have been Alice.....

[identity profile] elsh.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
There's a friend of my family's and one of his kids is Alysse. Ridiculous, I say. Reminds me of Ulysses.

[identity profile] eleanorgrace.livejournal.com 2007-01-27 10:00 am (UTC)(link)
I knew a girl named Allysonne in grade school.

[identity profile] holly-megan.livejournal.com 2007-01-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
One of my best friends spells it 'Alyson' I like it better than Allison, it looks softer to me, although I realize that I'm biased...
