[identity profile] abandoneddream.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
We are having a girl, due in June. We have been keeping a list of favorite names and plan to make our final selection once she has been born. All along, we have been crossing off any name that we don't completely love. However, a few of my flawed favorites keep coming back to mind. I need your help in determining whether they really deserve to be axed off the list.

Greta-
My son's name is Henry. Is Henry and Greta too reminiscent of Hansel and Gretel? If so, is that a bad thing... lol?

Azalea-
Her middle name is already set, it will be Lilian. Is Azalea Lilian too botanical? Be sure to consider the fact that we are not big fans of gardening.

What do you think?

I don't think Henry and Greta are too much like Hansel and Gretel. I don't think it'll be thought of like that usually. And if it ever is, I don't think it's a bad thing. It's different enough that if you like it, like it!

I don't like Azalea Lilian, not only is it very botanical, but it's kind of like, pick a flower! Both seems overload.

I do immediately think of Hansel and Gretel, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. I don't much like either name, and I think Azalea Lilian is a bit much.

I think Henry and Greta are a cute pair of names! I do agree with Azalea Lilian being a bit much.

I don't think of Hansel and Gretel at all. Also, I have a cousin Greta who is absolutely AMAZING. The only issue I have is when I try to type Greta, I always end up typing Great, but that's not necessarily a bad thing!

Azalea is okay, I prefer the similar(ish) name Azura. I think a nice middle name for Azalea is Elise, with Elise being pronounced with a hard E.

What about Azalea Liliana? I think it flows nicely. It's still a tribute to Lilian.

I like both of those. I don't think Henry and Greta is too "Hansel and Gretel" at all, and Greta Lilian has a nice rhythm to it.

Azalea Lilian ... hmmm. I think it's okay, but I do think two floral names is kind of a lot. On the other hand, how often will she say her full name?

OT, but is your icon from Follow That Bird?
That was one of my favorite movies when I was little!

I'm not sure! I found it in a whole batch of Muppet icons. I *think* they were all from "The Muppet Movie," but I'm not positive.

I did think of Hansel and Gretel right away...and I don't consider that to be a GOOD thing, but not a bad thing either. Just NMS.

Azalea Lilian is too botanical for me, but it isn't horrible.

I doubt many people recognize Azalea as a flower

Um, I think that's just you. :/

I like Greta Lillian a LOT better than Azalea Lillian. When I say Azalea Lillian out loud, it's sort of a mouthful to me. I also don't think Hansel and Gretel when I see Henry and Greta. Henry is an adorable name for a boy. :)

I always thought that "Greta" was a nickname for "Margaret", this is actually the first time I've heard it on its own. Neither names are my style - the town I come from plays a huge role - but I don't think that they sound bad together... it's kind of cute.

not a nickname, no.. it's the German form.

No, it's a nickname, even in German...I recently read "The Vision of Emma Blau" by Ursula Hegi, in which everyone is German...Stefan names his daughter Margret (sp?) and calls her Greta for short.

I'm also jumping on the Greta Lillian bandwagon...I think it's different, but not TOO different.

My grandpa owns a company that he employs mexican-german immagrants - one of his workers family lived in a house right next to them and his wife was named "Margaret", but they usually called her "Greta", and they also had a daughter named "Margaret", who they often refered to as "Greta". But they did use the names interchangably, so to me it's always been a "nick name" of sorts... that's all :)! I understand that it is a full name as well, this is just my personal association.

Azalea Lillian just doesn't flow to me and your right Henry and Greta sound too much like Hansel and Gretel.

but Greta is my girl name! someone said "sound of music" to me when I said Greta Louise. after she said it I could see it, but it never crossed my mind before.. even though I bought that movie for my daughter for christmas and we've watched it a few times since then...

so, one person making some connection doesn't mean everyone will. besides, Hansel is John, not Henry :)

But the girls in the Sound of Music are Gretel and Louisa. Nevertheless, I that combination- Greta Louise. I don't even like the name Louise, so that means something, I suppose.

I adore Azalea Lillian. I don't think it's too botanical, i sort of like the connection lily connection.

So so odd, I had a dream about a baby called Azalia last night(i spelt it like this for some reason)

Greta is blurgh, sorry.

I love Greta.
It goes really well with Henry in my opinion.
