Our baby girl, due in April, is destined to have a *mouthful* of a name. (This is our first baby.)
His family named all the children with "A" names
My family named all the chidren with "D" names
His surname is a 4-syllable Greek name starting with A.
My surname is a 2-syllable German name starting with H. (I didn't change my name when we got married.)
Adriana Lucia (my surname) (his surname)
(Adriana pronounced like "Audrey-ana," not "Adrian-a" ) Maybe Adri (like Audrey) for short.
For daily use: Adriana (his surname)
BONUS: It starts with an A & a D. It's pretty in writing and said out loud. The only Adriana I ever knew was smart, attractive, and kind, so I have good associations but not a lot of associations.
His Spanish-speaking relatives say Adriana the way I expect. I'm afraid that at school or with my midwestern relatives, there may be some confusion - but I love the name, and I'm prepared to be a bit stubborn about how the name is pronounced.

Date: 2007-01-09 06:56 pm (UTC)And if your little girl tried to correct teachers or other students in school, she'd probably sound like she was trying to be snooty or superior.
I love your pronunciation, though. But, with Midwestern/Northeastern accents, it would need an Audriana type spelling.
Otherwise the automatic pronunciation would end up being "Aye-dree-ana" and the "ana" will be given a hard "a" sound like in back or cat.

Date: 2007-01-09 07:06 pm (UTC)I understand what you're saying about the spelling, but I don't like the way it looks as well.
If she likes being called by the short version of the name, maybe we just send her to school spelling it Audrey. (My favorite babysitter was named Audrey, and there was the glamorous Audrey Hepburn...)
I've had strong feelings about my name as far back as I could remember, so I anticipate my daughter might also.

Best wishes to you and your little one.

Date: 2007-01-09 11:40 pm (UTC)We live in Michigan so that's midwest, but there are a LOT of Hispanic immigrants here now...
It's not that hard of a name and it's a lot easier to deal with a couple of corrections here and there..
It could be worse though... my own name is horribly mispronounced every single day and I often have to correct people who've known me for YEARS. Today someone called for me today looking for "n-eye-ee-vees" my name is Nieves - pronounced "nyeh-ves" SHORT e sounds.

Date: 2007-01-10 02:34 am (UTC)people will pronounce it however you/she tell(s) them to bc that's her name, you know? I wouldn't worry about the pretentious factor.
though that & the "Juli-AHN-a" one remind me right now of Beverly Hills 90210. The chick wasn't "Anne-dree-uh" she was "AHHHHN-dree-uh". lol

Date: 2007-01-12 06:18 am (UTC)Don't feel bad about being stubborn in how the name is pronounced. I have to correct people on my name all of the time. They like to add extra letters and syllables when they shouldn't be there. =/
