[identity profile] i-am-dsh.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Our baby girl, due in April, is destined to have a *mouthful* of a name. (This is our first baby.)

His family named all the children with "A" names
My family named all the chidren with "D" names

His surname is a 4-syllable Greek name starting with A.
My surname is a 2-syllable German name starting with H.  (I didn't change my name when we got married.)

Adriana Lucia (my surname) (his surname)

(Adriana pronounced like "Audrey-ana," not "Adrian-a" )  Maybe Adri (like Audrey) for short.
For daily use:  Adriana (his surname)

BONUS:  It starts with an A & a D.  It's pretty in writing and said out loud.  The only Adriana I ever knew was smart, attractive, and kind, so I have good associations but not a lot of associations.

His Spanish-speaking relatives say Adriana the way I expect.  I'm afraid that at school or with my midwestern relatives, there may be some confusion - but I love the name, and I'm prepared to be a bit stubborn about how the name is pronounced.

Being from a Midwestern state, I can tell you nobody around here would pronounce it "Audrey-ana" without being corrected.
And if your little girl tried to correct teachers or other students in school, she'd probably sound like she was trying to be snooty or superior.

I love your pronunciation, though. But, with Midwestern/Northeastern accents, it would need an Audriana type spelling.
Otherwise the automatic pronunciation would end up being "Aye-dree-ana" and the "ana" will be given a hard "a" sound like in back or cat.

No one thinks a kid is snooty for correcting people on the pronounciation of her name. It's just what you have to do if you have a name with multiple possible pronounciations.

It is a general statement, I'm aware not every person will think a child snooty for coreecting on their name.
Growing up having to correct people on my name, I know I've gotten snide remarks because of it.

I've never heard Adriana pronounced that way (Southern US) but I LOVE it so much more! :)

I'm from Ohio and all the Adrianas I know (four) pronounce it Audrey-anna, so it should be okay. We're going with Luciana Veda Nikolette +Last Name, (2 middle names is quite popular in both of our families) so I know all about mouthfull names lol

I've never heard of Adriana being pronounced Audrey-ana, so I think you'll have a lot of problems with that. Audriana might be better, although I'm not crazy about how that looks.

My nieces' half sister is name Adriana Luz, everyone calls her Audry (spelling it Adri)- so much in fact that her kindergarten teacher's helper actually spelled her name wrong on several art projects.

We live in Michigan so that's midwest, but there are a LOT of Hispanic immigrants here now...

It's not that hard of a name and it's a lot easier to deal with a couple of corrections here and there..

It could be worse though... my own name is horribly mispronounced every single day and I often have to correct people who've known me for YEARS. Today someone called for me today looking for "n-eye-ee-vees" my name is Nieves - pronounced "nyeh-ves" SHORT e sounds.

I have to correct people with my name all the time, I've actually had some really rude comments like "Why didn't your parents give you an American name?" or "You should think about getting a nickname that's easier for non-hispanic people to say."

To be honest i'd spell it Audriana...

I would always assume Adriana Ay-dree-ana

I like it! If you're willing to stick with the pronunciation, then go for it. There was a girl in one of my courses this year who was very adamant about her name being Juli-AHN-a, instead of Juli-ANN-a. The professor and the rest of the people in the class (and I'm assuming every one else in her life) quickly got used to it, and I didn't think she was being snobby at all. (Then again, I am constantly having to tell people how my own name is pronounced.)

I've heard it prn Ah-dree-ahn-uh & Ay-dree-ahn-uh & Ay-dree-anne-uh (with that spelling) though the Aw part does seem like it should be spelled Audriana. But I don't like it either. lol ok, so I'm no help, just full useless info/opinion.

people will pronounce it however you/she tell(s) them to bc that's her name, you know? I wouldn't worry about the pretentious factor.

though that & the "Juli-AHN-a" one remind me right now of Beverly Hills 90210. The chick wasn't "Anne-dree-uh" she was "AHHHHN-dree-uh". lol

I love the name, though as others said, Audriana might also be an option.

Don't feel bad about being stubborn in how the name is pronounced. I have to correct people on my name all of the time. They like to add extra letters and syllables when they shouldn't be there. =/
