If they mated.

Girls name I recently heard: Emerson Mae

Yuck- an Emma and Madison hybrid?!

I do not like it at all. Emerson is a name I wouldn't even use for a son, let alone a little girl.

..I've known of Emersons who are boys, never girls.

I wouldnt ever use it and I know the "son" bit making names masculine argument... but if I were to use it, I would use it for a girl. To me, all the Addison, Madison, Emerson and what have you names just sound better for girls. All in all, it's not the worst name I've ever heard. Granted it's not the best either=)

I don't think Emerson is supposed to be part of the hybrid trend, I think it's the giving-boys-name-to-girls trend. I think it's a perfectly fine name for a boy (though I wouldn't use it.)

It's also last name used as a first name trend

behindthename.com says:

Emerson: From a surname meaning "son of EMERY". The surname has been borne by Ralph Waldo Emerson, a 19th-century American poet and author who wrote about transcendentalism.

I like it for a boy.

Teri Hatcher named her daughter Emerson Rose back in 1997...

I love the meaning behind the name

Emerson (in the boys' section of names) - German, English - "son of Emery."

Emery - German - industrious leader.

It's not meant to be a hybrid of anything. It's a well-known name in my head. I prefer it for girls; it's very feminine to me somehow.

Teri Hacher's daughter is Emerson Rose. I don't like it either... I wonder why she did lol

I like the name Emerson on a girl. I love the name Mae though

[identity profile] bloomingtulip.livejournal.com 2007-01-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not really a hybrid, just a typically male (or surname) used on a girl.

the only Emerson i've ever known was a boy (he was named after the poet).

I like the name Emerson but I think Emisen is more girly, it's a name a friend made up from the name Emerson but for a girl.

I loathe both Emma and Madison but I actually really like Emerson. It's one of the few names my husband and I agreed upon but I'm pretty sure we've chose another name instead.

[identity profile] so-there.livejournal.com 2007-01-05 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a last name.

[identity profile] lastcastle.livejournal.com 2007-01-05 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's terrible as a first name for a girl. I feel like it'd be the kind of name that in 60 years people will look back on and think "yuck" just like we do now about Bertha.

The only way I'd use it (as a middle name only) would be if I wanted to name someone after Ralph Waldo Emerson, since I loathe both Ralph and Waldo.

I've thought about naming my girl Emerson! It was my grandpa's name. . .I like it better for a girl because you could call her Emmie.
