What's your opinion on including an accent mark in your child's name?

For example:

Zoë
František
André

Too much bureaucratic trouble (likely to be misspelled or not fit in standardized forms)? Too pretentious? Or totally reasonable, because you're just spelling it properly?

Do accent marks make it onto the official birth certificate?

I probably wouldnt do it simply for the sake of easiness. If I lived somewhere that had the accents naturally on the keyboards and as a part of the language, I'd be more inclined, but especially in the US I think it would be more hassle than it was worth, considering the name will most likely be pronounced the same way with or without the accent.

I think it's fine, particularly if that's the way the name is originally spelled. I have a problem with it when people butcher names by sticking random accents or apostrophes in there for no good reason.

In the US I think it's unreasonable for anyone to expect them to be used properly, if used at all. They just aren't part of our language, aren't easily typed out, aren't really necessary since they don't actually do much to clarify pronunciation when people don't know their meaning.

I'd probably try to get them on the birth certificate and maybe use them occasionally, just for fun. But I would be comfortable knowing that most of the time they won't be used - that would just be a frustrating lost battle.

One of my favorite girl's names is Jóna, pronounced YOH-nah. Without the accent tt wouldn't be the same name, and to me looks too masculine and loses some of its culture (which is really important to me).

Totaly reasonable as you're spelling ti properly. How do you now how to correctly pronounce the name otherwise?

I love Esmé & Amélie, with the accents.

I haven't yet decided if I want to name my daughter Esme or Esmé. The first I'd pronounce "EZ-mee" and the second "EZ-may." I actually like the first pronunciation better and will probably end up naming my daughter Esme. Of course it will also depend on the opinion of my future life partner. =D

I like it on Renée... but I don't get it when sometimes people spell it as Renee'

Is that apostrophe to signify that there is an accent omitted, or do people actually think that is the correct accent?

Yes, it is to signify an accent. :) At least that's what I learned.

Zoë is one of the names my fella and I like for our hypothetical future daughter, and I intend to use the accent mark. I think it looks lovely, and it's the proper spelling (though that doesn't seem to hold much weight nowadays). Anyway, I'm all for accent marks where they belong.

The only ones I like are Zoë and Chloë. I like them better with the accents than without. I do think theyre a little pretentious though.

Not sure about the certificates though. Maybe these days.

I have an accent on my name and it's not on my birth certificate. I only use it so people look at my name more carefully, not that it helps.

my name is Janeé (Pronounced like Renée)

It is not on my birth certificate, and whether it is spelled with it or not, i still get Jay-nee.

I love Zoë! I can't stand to see it spelt any other way! I find the spelling Zoey really...stupid. It just looks pointless and idiotic.

i think the ` ' and " are necessary sometimes for the pronouncuation;

sometimes it gives the finishing touch, other times it looks screwed up.
mostly i like it on French names. English names dont need the è or é.

It's too bad more people in the U.S. don't know how to use their ALT key + keypad!
