Nov. 20th, 2006 03:27 pmI usually just bitch and complain about everybody else's names, so I thought I'd post some I like. We hope to be having kids within the next year or two so this is a semi-practical discussion ;)
GIRLS
HANNA
this is a given, and has been my only choice for a first daughter since my grandma Hanna passed away when I was 12. It's annoying that it's so popular, but oh well.
ESTHER
love the look, love sound, love the story, love the nickname Esti. Swoon.
TERESA
for the many exemplary women named Teresa in history, and for the timelessness and strength of the name. I definitely want to use this.
HANNA ESTHER is my DREAM girl name.
Other combos:
Hanna Teresa
Teresa Miriam
I'd like to stick EUGENIA in there somewhere, after my other grandma and my great-grandpa Eugene, and because I like it, but it doesn't really fit anywhere.
BOYS
ADAM
The perfect international biblical masculine name, spelled the same way in lots of languages.
EZRA
Love the sound and the many traditions about the biblical Ezra.
SEBASTIAN
JEREMIAH
a great alternative to the boring Jeremy.
CHRISTOPHER
common, but it's my dad's name and my dad is the bomb ;)
Combinations
Adam Ezra
Adam Jeremiah
Sebastian Eugene (again, the grandma and great-grandpa)
I'm so bad at coming up with combos!
My taste:
1. Names that I would actually use have to be fairly "international" as I think we'll be spending a fair bit of time outside North America.
2. I study ancient Hebrew literature so I love Hebrew names, but am not Jewish - biblical names are great, but I don't think names that have traditionally only been used by Jewish families are appropriate for me to usurp, although I love many of them.
3. I hate names that are just some pretty sounds thrown together. They have to have a strong history and a strong sound. (Names that I think are bland and wishy-washy are, for example, most names with the sound -ay or -lyn.)
4. I HATE cute. Puppies are cute. Little girls will be women and I don't want any daughter of mine to be "cute." I want her to be strong, classy, and smart. With a name to match.
5. I'm a fan of spelling things right ;)
Comments, opinions, suggestions for other names I might like (lol, my list is so short!) are all welcome. Go ahead. I can dish it out AND I can take it ;)

Date: 2006-11-20 03:46 pm (UTC)I love ALL your boy names. Christopher is my hubby's name, and we plan to use it as a middle name for our first boy, if we're blessed with one.
I hate Eugene because I went to school in a town called Eugene. A horrible town called Eugene. :P

Date: 2006-11-20 05:13 pm (UTC)That's funny about Eugene :)

Date: 2006-11-20 04:18 pm (UTC)I totally agree with that
love your boys names, but i think Ezra is a little too feminin-sounding for me.
From your girls names i only like Esther, the rest is not really my taste :)

Date: 2006-11-20 05:15 pm (UTC)The spellng isn't a big deal for me, but my grandma's name was without the H so I think we'll go with that. :)

Date: 2006-11-20 05:19 pm (UTC)And I agree about the middle names - that is how we'd probably use Esther, Ezra and Eugene (I really WANT to like Eugene, but somehow can't bring myself to like it enough for a fn anyway!).

Date: 2006-11-20 05:22 pm (UTC)I've always loved Jeremiah so it makes me happy that someone else has it on their list :)

Date: 2006-11-20 05:18 pm (UTC)ESTHER - Esti is pretty, Esme is a favourite of mine so perhaps that's why.
TERESA- really dislike this name. I live of Theresa Avenue, it just reminds me of my house (which i love!) but...it doesnt remind me of anything remotely attractive name wise.
BOYS
ADAM- it's okay, i do know a lot of Adam's though.
EZRA- like, but I don't like he fact it's biblical.
SEBASTIAN- love love
JEREMIAH - ehh jeremiah was a bullfrog... (and im not even american)
CHRISTOPHER- never liked
IMO sebastian is a wonderful first name but it's like Alexander, it seem sto fit with mostly anything as a middle name.

Date: 2006-11-20 05:22 pm (UTC)I've never heard of the bullfrog thing, actually (I'm Canadian - should I have?)! Will look it up...
Thanks for your thoughts!

Date: 2006-11-20 06:38 pm (UTC)ESTHER - Not my taste, it's just too old for me.
TERESA - Another pretty one. Simple, but beautiful.
ADAM - I don't have anything against it, but it's too plain for me.
EZRA - I've found myself increasingly loving this name
SEBASTIAN - Ehhh, it'll always remind me of the crab in Little Mermaid.
JEREMIAH - I love this name, but I'd probably never use it for the "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" that my fiance reminds me of every time I bring up that name. LoL But he does really like the song, incidentally.
CHRISTOPHER - Like you said, common, but it's great for a middle name, especially with a short name, like Ezra perhaps.

Date: 2006-11-20 07:23 pm (UTC)I really like Esther actually. My boss is named Esther and she's cool.
Teresa is quite nice, but it might get shortened to Tess, which I HATE. Having said that, the only Theresa I know just gets called Theresa so maybe not.
Not a big fan of Ezra, Jeremiah or Sebastian I'm afraid. Adam and Christopher are nice enough. I can't stand Eugene though, I don't know why. It conjures up the image of a really weedy kid who'd get picked on all the time...

Date: 2006-11-20 07:45 pm (UTC)Ezra I had not even thought of good name. Adam is my brothers name.

Date: 2006-11-20 07:57 pm (UTC)HANNA - It's a 'little girl cutesy name' to me, but I like how it's after your grandmother, it's not a bad name, just not my style, that's all.
ESTHER - I have a great-aunt by this name who's, well, not someone I'd ever want to be associated with, so the name isn't attractive to me in the least.
TERESA - again, I have a bad association, well 2 bad associations, with this name... also I can't help but think of Passions, "Theresa...." "But momma!", wow, terrible show.
HANNA ESTHER - I do like the combo, it's very classy.
Hanna Teresa - I like the former better.
Teresa Miriam - I adore "Miriam", mostly because I love the nickname Mimi.
BOYS
ADAM - beautiful, classy, awesome name.
EZRA - I actually really like this name as well
SEBASTIAN - A little too "extreme" for my tastes, but ok.
JEREMIAH - too much of a mouthful for me, but again, could be worse.
CHRISTOPHER - hey, if you want to honour your dad, it makes a great middle name.
Adam Ezra - I don't really like these as a combo
Adam Jeremiah - As a combo this is nice.
Sebastian Eugene - Meh...
Of all your names, I like:
Hanna Miriam (pretty, but not frilly IMO)
&
Adam Christopher (I like middle names that are in honour of someone)
I'm so bad at coming up with combos!

I've only ever heard/seen it pronounced "esti" thats why I brought it up...

Date: 2006-11-20 11:58 pm (UTC)Oh well. I'm not really concerned. I don't think many people outside of Quebec would think of it. Lots of names probably mean something bad in SOME language somewhere in the world! And, if a hypothetical Esther every did move to Quebec, she wouldn't have to use her nickname :)
Thanks for pointing it out though. You learn something new every day! Quebec curse words are so rich.

Date: 2006-11-20 11:20 pm (UTC)Well, no *only* Polish names, but lots of names that are spelled the same way in both Polish and English - like Hanna, Teresa, Sebastian, and Adam. It's important to me that a name is "international" :)

Date: 2006-11-20 11:24 pm (UTC)As for family names - It's not a huge thing for me in general, but my grandma Hanna was the most amazing lady in so many ways, and I'd love to tell a daughter about the great woman she was named after. AND I think it's a great name besides that. That is the only family name that I'm really set on!

Date: 2006-11-21 12:52 am (UTC)ESTHER - I love Esther. It's a beautiful, strong name.
TERESA - not really my style
SEBASTIAN, JEREMIAH - Both these names are great. I really like Sebastian in particular, and I think Seb makes a good nickname.
